    Windows update and drivers

I specifically disabled the automatic driver downloading, but when I clicked on "check for updates", drivers for everything (plus real Windows updates) started to download.
    What the ****?

I did it through registry. PreventDeviceMetadataFromNetwork key.
It does show as disabled in the advanced system settings, so I don't understand why is it not working.

Whatever that script you linked is, it's out of question, because this is not my own PC that I am installing here, so third party solutions can't be used.

I'm just trying to understand WHY doesn't the official/native way of doing this doesn't work.

    Thank you for your reply.

Er- what official native way? Is that documented by MS? I'd really like to know...!

MS is making blocking Windows Updates progressively harder. Hence the script.

    Good luck!

If there is a registry settings for given action, I consider it official. It's not a hack or anything, it's built into the system.

Sorry, totally disagree. You're welcome to your opinion, of course.

So after several hours of trying all kinds of registry tweaks I could find on the internet, I give up.
I even downloaded the O&O Shutup program, and it didn't help either (because I already had ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate applied).

I could live (angrily, but I could) with forced updates and with restart times that can be postponed outside of active hours, but this driver crap is incredible, absolutely incredible.

I am currently trying another clean installation with network cable disconnected, and I am installing all drivers manually. I HOPE Windows Update won't download all the crap regardless, because if it will, I think I'll just install Windows 7 instead.

I do believe if Windows update thinks its driver is newer than the one you have installed, it will install its driver over yours. IMHO, it should ask before doing this, with an option to not do it and keep what you have. Microsoft seems to think otherwise though.
Was the source of that reg edit Microsoft? TechNet etc? If not I'm with dalchina and of the opinion its not official. The fact that it didn't work also hints at that. Just my opinion.

Roll Back Driver. 10 should not install that version again, but it will try to install the new one, once released.
