What Times WU To Auto Check For Updates?

This system always checked for updates within about an hour of being started. After v.1803 installation, the WU check is usually after 9 PM, never shortly after boot up. That begs the question of what is triggering the check for updates? WU has not found KB4284848 yet with the auto check.

    Hi jamis.

You could check this out regarding timing.

Change Automatic Maintenance Settings in Windows 10

If you look at your Windows update history are any updates failing?

Aha! Windows Update auto checks sometime after 9:00 PM every day since v.1803 installation. No fails shown. However, Automatic Maintenance is currently scheduled for 2:00 AM (the system is only on one day a week at 2:00 AM for NIS full system scan). Tonight is the scheduled scan night, so we'll see what happens. Also Automatic Maintenance states it was run at 11:19 AM this morning (with no updates) and WU states the last check was at 10:19 PM yesterday (with no updates). I'm waiting for KB4284848 to show up.

Any chance you have a Pro version with any update deferrals set.

Nope, as the specs. show, it's Home, a free upgrade from W7 Home edition.

Well, WU did not run last night at all. WU states the last check was at 10:19 PM on 06/28/18. Automatic Maintenance last ran on 06/29/18 at 3:59 PM even though it's set to run at 2:00 AM and the system was on last night. Again, no updates were downloaded. Still waiting for KB4284848 to show up.

There is a scheduled task for Windows Update. Best I can determine, it ran here at 7 this morning and will run again this evening.

Just for fun could you run sfc /scannow and see if it reports anything, likely won't but no harm in running.

You could manually install the KB but you wouldn't know why it didn't install or if issue had been fixed.

Could I suggest a Window Update Reset. You won't be able to see prior history but I would like to think it gets the update process back in line.

TomCat: Thanks for the pointer to the task scheduler. Don't know why I didn't think to look there. The entries for my system look very much like yours. It's all set to kick off WU after 8:00 PM every day. I'm going to leave the system on over night for a few days to see if things change. I've turned on the history for the task scheduler to see what might be amiss.

Ken: WU worked as it was supposed to for the last cum. update on 06/13/18 and I've not changed anything of this system, so I'm just going to wait and watch the task history for awhile. This is a vanilla system with almost no customization.

    Keep us updated.

Still strange it won't pull the update down.

One last question, you are not on metered connection are you?
