What Times WU To Auto Check For Updates?

Yes, NIS is providing the firewall protection. No indication in the logs that it is stopping the process. If NIS is indeed stopping WU, then I should see something tonight when I manually run it from Settings. Also, task scheduler history for Windows Update and sih shows no errors either. Pictures at 11 and this hour has 22 minutes.

Update:
OK, at 10:07PM EST, I ran "Check For Updates" from the Settings panel. NIS was running and WU immediately began the download of KB04340917 and 24 minutes later, the final restart finished. The system is now at bld. 17134.191. Still puzzled as to why it didn't auto update the last two Cums. Guess I'll wait for the next one and see what transpires.

So basically it finds updates if you initiate the "Check" but does not if you let the system check on its own.

Not sure where the differences are in the process path, that is system vs manual. Firewalls are not the issue.

So when you entered the Settings > Update and security panel there would have been a time present that it last check for updates on its own, automated. Was it current. Mine says yesterday

Yes, that has been the basic problem since this issue started back in June. Auto update would not find anything to download, but the manual check for updates from the settings panel would (see post 11 in this thread). At 10:07PM last night, the time stamp stated the last check was today at 8:24PM and that the system was up to date with the last update having been done on 07/10/18. When I ran the check for updates from the settings panel, WU immediately downloaded the latest Cum. I refuse to believe that the update became available between 8:24PM and 10:07PM of the same day. This is the basis for my confusion. WU runs every day, but does not find updates that are known to be available. This time it went for 18 days without finding an update. Who knows how long it would have gone on, without a manual intervention. The upside of this situation is it looks like I won't be surprised by unforeseen updates. Maybe......

Added note: after the 17134.191 update was finished, WU automatically ran another check for updates, finding nothing. So the settings panel now states the WU last checked yesterday at 10:34PM and that the system is up to date.

The last update was released around the time I get home from work and was 1 out of the last 3 that did not download and be ready for restart when I got home. The other 2 were all ready for me to reboot. However before this, they were always making me check for updates. That was when I was active on the PC at the time, so maybe they do this when released and your settings are to get them asap, while you are not active on the PC.

By Home systems does the same but it auto downloads updates. In trying to recreate what you are seeing I went to updates. Played with settings and my "Automatically download updates even over metered connections" will not stay on.

As I backed out it was busily downloading the update.

While others are experiencing issues similar to you have you done the inplace repair?

In place repair isn't much effort. I recommend people have a data back up which everyone needs anyway.
