Can someone please provide an example of an open source formats commonly encountered on the web?
If I don't use Microsoft Edge, Can I uninstall Web Media Extensions safely?

It's not just Edge that uses it. Other Windows 10 apps use it too. You'll need it if you want to play "content delivered in the OGG container or encoded using the Vorbis or Theora codecs" in Films & TV or Photos, for example. Uninstalling the Web Media Extensions will limit the types of video you can play in any of the native Windows 10 apps. In fact, for playing some DVD video files you may even want to install the MPEG2 Video Extension.

Of course, your VLC comes with all those codecs (and more) but only VLC can use those. If you don't use anything other than VLC for waching videos, then you could uninstall the Web Media Extensions. But at only 16KB it's not really going to free up much disk space
