How to turn off Windows Update

I have a laptop running Windows 10. I wish to turn off, completely, Windows Update, partly (but not solely) because its' internet connection is metered and frequently near its' limit. I cannot find how it's done, I thought I had done it but today found it downloading yet another.

I really don't understand why this is so difficult to find.

Thanks Dalchina I will certainly try this.
I'd also like to take the opportunity to express my displeasure that MS can turn off this feature which I'm sure many people used. I understand that they consider it important to update Windows but this is my computer, not theirs, and I should be able to do with it as I please. How dare they force me to work the way they want, keep your nose out of my business MS.

May I suggest any displeasure you feel be voiced on a Microsoft forum or via the Feedback Hub app.

Like you, we are just users, subject to the same problems.

I have Win 10 Pro, so choose to defer upgrades (up to 365 days). Setting updates to Notify also gives me control. Pro licenses are expensive- but I paid about $40 for a Win 8 Pro license when they were on special offer, and now I'm glad I did.
