1709/1803 Had To Delay Updates As A Result Of Multiple Failed Installs

Tried everything, disabling A/V, doing Advanced Disk Cleanup etc. etc. and having a multiple boot scenario makes matters worse as often the "Restart" button in WU fails to restart the entire machine....i.e. the graphics fail to start unless the system is powered down and back up again, NOT what W10 thinks is a restart. But if I power down and back up the update fails. So dammit. I've Delayed all updates for 35 days in all my 10's.

When I found my self in this situation, I did a reinstallation of windows 10 (https://support.microsoft.com/...p/4...s-10-reinstall) and during the process I chose to KEEP DATA AND APPS. You have to download to your hardrive the installation files for 1803 and then start the reinstall process. You should download the files to a partition or drive other than the one containing the operating system.

This was the only method that fixed my update problems, at least for a while. You just have to be patient with it, because it could take a few hours. All your programs, apps and data will be kept and available after the reinstall. You also have to agree and let the install program to check for and download other updates. This will ensure that all the needed drivers will be updated. After finishing the install process just make a backup image of your system hdd and a recovery disk.

Mine seems to stick at that black screen with a plain Win 10 blue windows logo at the very end - no progress bar or circular spinning dots. Waited for an hour then pressed the power button and restarted, and it failed.
Have since reinstalled completely and got as far as Anniversary Edition update but neither v1709 nor v1803 will install, they both fail.
I ran the WU troubleshooter and it fixed whatever but they still fail. Will try the standalone versions tomorrow.

Well I've tried every which way that is possible - it will not install. I give up.

Did you try looking at the failed installation log files for errors? Search for 'error' towards the end of the files to find clues for what might be causing problems. See under log files here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...upgrade-errors Note the use of the setupdiag tool for analysis.

No I didn't. Thanks but I looked up the error for the last 3 attempts before that (which I have now forgotten) and MS had NO information anywhere regarding it.
The point being, MS should make "updates" into exactly that, not an entire system change, which is what they do with every major numerical release.
Plus failed attempts should display in plain language what went wrong.
I am not going any further with this and will most likely block 1803 permanently on all 3 systems.
I'm in Windows 7 right now where I will remain until its expiry in 2020.
I kept the 3 x 10 installations for testing purposes, and now I don't test software any more there's no point in doing all this hard work.
    Thanks again.

On reading more Google hits I've decided that perhaps it's objecting to my eSATA drive. As I had already disabled A/V there couldn't be anything else to stop it.
I also noticed that when it asked for a restart it appeared to go into a form of hybrid sleep (despite settings to the contrary) from which it would not wake.
I had to power off in the end having waited an hour for it restart.
That of course sets off a whole new lot of errors.
I'm currently downloading the latest incarnation of 10 ISO using the Media Creation Tool and will eventually try again but right now even retirees like myself have things to do rather than sit gawking at what may become a giant paper weight.
I'll report back when I get a chance to do this once again.
I'm a bit leery that all these attempts will prompt it to ask for a different product code/license.
That I wouldn't be able to afford.
Edit: When I have time, I'll try an in-place upgrade using a DVD with AV turned off and all peripheral hardware including my eSATA drive off.

This is my latest effort with external drives off - even my printer off.
In this case I used a DVD that I burned with the updated 10 ISO.
I have a feeling it doesn't like the fact that I multi-boot using EasyBCD.

I was told elsewhere in these forums to download the standalone of Quality Update KB4284822. That installed fine. 1803 now gets much further alonmg before it fails. Still a mystery to me.
