Help - What's Happening with Update After Reversion to 1709?

Pardon another, but it seems that update still may not be sorted following the recent failure of 1803 and Windows initiated reversion to 1709

This entailed the previously discussed reset of corrupted update history, system file checking (all OK), and setting of downloads and installations to require permissions (it's Win 10 Pro, not home as on the icon) - all made possible by the help received.

Several matters are causing concern that something still isn't quite right in Windows settings or Windows update - or else that I'm misunderstanding the situation:

    1. The Windows update blue screen with the circling white dots and 'wait a moment' message has for a couple of days been coming up for perhaps 10 sec every time when the computer is shut down - perhaps suggesting that either a prior download is stuck, or that something not OKed is trying to download.

Or perhaps just that I need to OK the installation of the last download, but it's not being offered.

    2. There's two more downloads on offer (for Windows Defender and Adobe Flash Player) which after the last lot of mayhem I really don't want to OK pending some clarity on what's happening.

    3. There's a red warning to the effect that 'some settings are managed by your organisation' displaying in WIndows update. This may be just a routine notification of the update settings, or not.

    4. The last minor update download (possibly for Defender) I OKed may somehow (?) have messed up the Firefox installation. (the shortcut problem addressed in the browsers topic)

It wasn't recorded by Windows update history (perhaps because it wasn't installed?), but there wasn't any request presented for permission to install it either.

I haven't run with the setting requiring Windows to ask for permission for both downloading and installation of updates before.

    1. Does the red warning text (3) suggest a problem? I'm the admin, it's a stand alone PC.

    2. Should it automatically be asking for permission to install what's been OKed to download?

    3. Should downloads and installations both be recorded in Windows update history/how does this work now that it's required to ask for permissions?

    4. Does the circling dots/blue Windows update screen before shutdown suggest a download is in progress that either I don't know about, or else that the one OKed a few days ago didn't for some reason complete and is hung?

    Thanks

No. This is misunderstood time and again because of MS's obscure wording, and has been answered many times.

It's from the context of an IT admin in a company setting group policy- typically restrictions or certain settings. For a personal user it means either:
    - you have Pro and have used the Group Policy editor
    or
    - there are registry changes from the default equivalent to one or more made by the Group Policy editor.

So some setting has been made. This red text has also been noted after certain Windows updates/upgrades.

    - almost certainly nothing to do with updates.
    - feel free to run as a matter of routine
    chkdsk c: /scan
    sfc /scannow
    - from an admin command prompt

Note that in reverting to 1709 you will need to take appropriate steps to block a further upgrade.

As you have Pro, make sure updates are set to Notify, and upgrades (feature updates) are deferred.
This you can do in Group Policy, and such setting will result in the red text you have observed.

    Thanks D, you're very patient.

Windows 10 is a bit like keeping an old car that's basically sound with a number of well known faults going... : )

Sounds like all is OK, it's certainly running fine.

I understand on the red text message - it's certainly a bit misleading in that it feels more like a warning of a problem rather than just as a simple statement that certain settings have been chosen.

I ran the Windows system file and disc scans just in case, both came up clean.

Feature updates are deferrred for 3 months, and are required to ask permission before downloading or installing.

It remains a mystery as to what Windows is up to behind the blue 'just a moment' screen on closedown. It's still holding on it for a short time. There's nothing coming up on a web search.

It was there before however and went away after a week or two, so hopefully it's something Windows has under control....

When it appears in Windows Update there is also a 'View configured update policies' link just below it. If you click on this it should tell you that policies for Active Hours start and end times are set. It should only appear when an update is pending a restart. In practice it just seems to confuse users. At least, this is what you'd see in 1803. You may well now see this in 1709 too if you have had a recent cumulative update.

Ta Bree. That link actually opens to sources for a lot of information on Windows update options.

It's a bit scary how easy it is to miss information or links, even when they are right in front of us or when reading a document. There's just so much of it. I find that I sometimes just don't register the significance of a key word or something.

Or having been into a topic two weeks ago discover that I've forgotten it until something prompts recall.

There's also the little matter of skimming a piece looking for something, or getting target fixated - it tends to obscure taking in the bigger picture.

: ) Must be my age or something...
