Error 0x80092004 on latest update (KB4100403)

Argh! I normally consider myself pretty competent when it comes to troubleshooting Windows or other issues. But I'm at wits' end here.

I am repeatedly receiving an 0x80092004 error whenever I attempt to install the latest update, KB4100403, on Windows 10 Pro x64 Build 1803. (Part of the problem, frankly, may be that this is a 10 year old laptop that came with Vista installed years ago.) I've tried all of the following troubleshooting steps:
    1. Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter multiple times
    2. Ran DISM /cleanupimage and SFC /scannow (no errors reported)
    3. Downloaded and tried to install KB4100403 x64 manually from the Microsoft site's repository
    4. Manually stopped and restarted all services (BITS, WUAUSERV, etc.)
    5. Ran the "reset Windows Update" batch file available here on TENforums
    6. Tried all of the above steps again in Safe Mode
    7. Tried WUMT
    8. Deleted SoftwareDistribution folder and tried several of the above again

The only thing I can think of to try that I haven't yet, is a Repair Install or something of that nature. Any other ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    - note this update is problematic for some (= can even cause PC death) - and notes and caveats on it seem to be being revised as more problems emerge.

Whether your case falls into that category is another question... you might simply want to wait it out for a bit and try some weeks on.

You could try downloading it manually (see first page of the above).

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did try downloading and installing it manually - no luck.

I'm not particularly concerned about the patch because I don't think I have any of the "triggers" described in that thread such as QuickBooks; but neither do I have an SSD that would make the patch necessary. I'm more worried about this patch preventing subsequent patches that ARE more important from getting installed. And, it frustrates me that I can't figure out what's wrong.

If anyone else has ideas - even generic "here's how to make WU work again" suggestions - let me know. Thanks.

Could be that patience is all that is required. That error number seems uncommon though. If you still have problems with the NEXT cumulative update, then try repairs.

If the WU trouble shooter and SFC /SCANNOW and chkdsk show nothing wrong, then for the moment you could simply leave well alone. You could have a look at the Windows Update logs of course.
