WinUpdate - now can't open or use new laptop

Overnight MS sent an Update.
When I turn on the laptop, and after a wait, the screen shows options ''to make it easier to use'' . One selects by using the space bar.
I have tried every combination that I can imagine (and each time it goes back to the original screen to re-commence).

So I can't access my computer at all.
Even getting here (to the forum) was a mission ... had to find another computer, reset passwords etc.

It's hard to imagine that my laptop is the only one affected ... is there a Microsoft person reading this who can advise me as to what steps to take to get back my system (which I had set up exactly how I wanted .... why doesn't MS ASK before messing up a private pc?) or who can tell the appropriate department at MS to send out a fix?

Solution has been posted on this forum.

Note we strongly recommend the routine use of disk imaging- which I regard as an essential precaution given this sort of thing. As I have Pro I can choose WHEN to upgrade, update my disk image, then upgrade in a controlled manner. My disk images give me a way back if things go badly.

Hello delchina,

can only assume that this is the problem so have a choice now:
1. proceed with instructions as per the first link (viz. black dktop) or

2. reinstall latest mirror image from external HDD

Do you know - what to do with the spare 8gb disk for the first option?
Difficulty here is that step 2 states

At the blue screen, choose your keyboard layout’s language. [fig. 1]

however I don't have access to anything.

Also, will the image over-ride the current blocked situation?

btw I sign in normally, user name and password but instead of getting desktop I get the blocked screen where no selections achieve anything.

Have inserted Repair Disk .... can't open.
Have connected Ext HDD with OS Image ... can't access.
After sign in the laptop just loops and will not permit activation of ''Accept'' to the right of ''More Information''

First check if your symptoms match this (the link was in the 3rd line of the 1st article)

You can also check your current build by booting your PC from any boot disk (a Win 10 boot disk or e.g. Kyhi's excellent one available from the top of the Software and Apps section here) and examining the properties of explorer.exe, Details e.g. if unsure if the last update was the 1803 upgrade.

If your mirror image was created before this upgrade/update, then if it is a clone, then of course everything will be replaced. I don't know how you have created it...
