    Following refresh, have errors updating Windows and installing apps


    I did a refresh on my Windows 10 desktop the other day, to see if it would free up space on my boot drive by eliminating stuff I didn't use. That seems to have worked, but I am getting errors in Windows update:

    I have tried re-booting, signing out/in of account, downloading and running Windows Update troubleshooter, and clearing Windows update cache with batch file that: stops BITS, stops Windows Update service, deletes cache and re-starts Windows Update service and BITS.

    None of those steps fixed my problems, and I am open to suggestions as how to fix this

    I should also add that I ran both DISM and SFC /scannow, and found no issues

    Try updating Defender inside the Windows Security app:

    That usually helps to clear up Windows Update (WU) issues. Then, you can manually download and apply the cumulative update from the Microsoft Update Catalog. If you don't know how, I wrote a tutorial about this: Download and Install Windows Update from Microsoft Update Catalog.

    There were even more problems than what I originally posted. For instance the Windows Update troubleshooter I downloaded from a MS site, ran and said it was fixed (or maybe found no problems to fix, I don't remember for sure). However, windows has a Windows Update troubleshooter built in, which you can access in the Settings app. That one failed to start and gave me another error message starting 0x8 and I don't remember the rest of the digits.

    So, I decided to refresh a second time, and so far so good. I have installed all the updates that were throwing errors before, and have been able to install MS Store apps.

    Since I still don't know what happened the first time, I am going to wait on marking this solved. If everything is still going good tomorrow, I will return to this thread and mark it so. And if something goes haywire, it might be my doing, and I might have a better idea of what I installed, modified or removed that goofed things up.

    The same problem re-surfaced, preventing me from updating or installing MS Store apps. I believe the culprit is software I installed called ImDisk, gotten from here https://imdisk.en.lo4d.com - which I have been using to create a RAMDisk for my browser caches and Windows Temp file folder.

    It comes with it's own uninstaller, and upon uninstalling and rebooting, the problem has gone away. I am going to mark solved.

    Does anyone know of a RAMDisk utility that doesn't cause problems in Windows 10?

    The free AMD Radeon RAMDisk works pretty well. I used the non-AMD version of it (same maker, AMD just licenses it) for years. Check it out at AMD Radeon RAMDisk.
