Today's Windows 10 update locked me out

I chose to restart when windows 10 asked me to install today's update, Now it has a page asking if I want to rollback or reset my laptop. No system restore and it can't fix start up. I did get to the log on screen but it's asking for a password and I didn't have one. Can't boot to safe mode. Has there been any solution to this today?

I have this problem on 3 different machines. 1 of them is refusing to accept a password. I was able to enable the local admin account and log in. I then created a new user and was able to log in. Surprisingly the original account was then accepting its password again. But whichever account I used, the Windows Start and Search buttons were not working whereas, once I restored the desktop, I could start programs using the icons on the desktop.

On 2 machines I have seen a strangely worded error message " sihost.exe Unknown hard error" (Note hard rather than hardware)

Have given up on one and have reformatted the disk, waiting for some suggestions before I touch the others.

    Good Luck

I guessed the correct password but my desktop will not load. C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable is what I get and mostly black with nothing working. Tried to boot to safe mode but it just came back to the same black desktop after looking like it was applying the update
