Update to Windows 10, Version 1803 kills Lenovo laptop

A couple of days ago, update 1803 for Windows 10 Home (64 bit) installed on our desktop with no problems. However, today 1803 tried to install on our Lenovo Z50-70 laptop (also 64 bit Windows 10). We left the house, and when we got back, the laptop screen asked what keyboard I wanted to use. Uh oh, this didn't look good. I selected US, and then it took me to the Choose An Option page. Here are the options that were presented:
... Continue. Exit and roll back
... Use a device (USB, network, etc.)
    ... Use another operating system
... Troubleshoot (Reset PC or see Advanced Option)
    ... Turn off your PC

I'm an experienced PC user, but no genius by any means. I selected the first option, which gave three options for rolling back, none of which worked. Nothing in the second option seems to apply. I don't have another operating system, so the third option is out. Troubleshoot seemed like the most likely place to go, but nothing there helps. Then I selected the last option to turn off the PC. Upon restarting, nothing is any better. It just starts the cycle over again with selecting a keyboard.

It seems to me that something got corrupted during the update process. Where do I go from here? Thanks for your help.

    Hi.
Can you get into Safe Mode? Sometimes, if you can get in there, after a few minutes it will popup that the update was unsuccessful, and then rollback to the previous version.

Cannot get into Safe Mode. The PC gives options for various things, but getting into Safe Mode is not one of them. I'm thinking that I may have to reinstall Windows. BTW (I don't know if this helpful) I ran CHKDSK from the boot drive from the Command Prompt and had zero errors on the disk.

Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

After you get back up and running go download the latest hardware drivers for Windows 10, from Lenovo support website Install them all before attempting to install 1803 again and keep them handy as you may need to reinstall them again after the upgrade due to WU installing windows native drivers that some notebooks don't like at all.
The Block driver update for the future, upgrade them manually from the Lenovo support website Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

I contacted Microsoft, and dealt with a couple of technicians late last night. Basically, it appears that I am going to have to "reset" Windows 10. I downloaded the windows.iso file overnight and burned it to a DVD. Microsoft is supposed to call back in the next hour or so to help me through the process. I'll let you know how it goes.

The laptop is now up and running after reinstalling Windows 10. I was communicating with a Microsoft technician via phone and chat during the process. He indicated that Microsoft issued a "No boot after update" notice because of problems with 1803.
During the update, my personal files were moved to a folder called Windows.old.000. It will be a manual process to copy them back to where I want them, but at least they didn't vanish.
To summarize, I downloaded windows.iso and burned it to a DVD (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415). I then went into BIOS to make the DVD drive the first option during boot. I rebooted with the DVD, and the reinstall started. It took about 2 hours for the reinstall process.

Sorry you had to go through all that, but glad you got it sorted and didn't lose your files. :)

HELP! This morning Windows wants to install 1803 AGAIN! (Windows 10 Home)

How do I prevent the "update" from installing? I changed to "metered" internet in the Update and Security settings.

In a state of near panic, I went through the Microsoft Virtual Agent to get to a Chat with a technician. He changed Task Scheduler settings and added a registry key to prevent updates from installing. He said once the bugs in 1803 are fixed, I would hear from Microsoft about how to proceed (I'll be surprised if that happens). Anyway, I feel safe for now.
