    Restore Windows Update Service

In an effort to stop the relentless lengthy downloading and subsequent failure to install of the Features Update (to 1803) I used a workaround that included stopping the windows update service in Services(local).
Attempting to download other updates using the Windows 10 Update assistant eventually leads to 'The windows update service is not in the list' 0x80074024.
I have trawled the web/Microsoft forums but cannot find how to restore the Windows update Service.
    Any thoughts?

What did you actually do if it was stopping the service then just restart it

See if it is disabled in msconfig.

    Brinks Reset Windows solution

Thanks for the elegant solution.I downloaded the .bat file and proceeded as instructed. The result followed your script as far as "cannot reset windows update since 'windows update' (wuauserv) failed to stop". Press any key to continue.

Doing so : 'the Background Intelligence Service is starting.... the service name is invalid' ... then several lines that disappear too quickly to read, followed by the command screen with a single line : 'the Background Intelligence Service is stopped'.

I am still searching 'Stop Automatic Updates' to find which solution I used. I had not expected to lose Windows Update from Services, merely to stop it running.

That sounds, like you have actually removed those services. You can not fix something, that is not there.

Press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously, type "msconfig" into the "Run" box and click "OK". When msconfig starts, click on the "Services" tab, click on "Service" to sort the list alphabetically, scroll down to "Windows Update" and make sure it is checked. If it isn't, check it and click "OK".

    Resolved - after a fashion

I am afraid I took the nuclear option and reset my Win 10 Home, having ticked the box to keep my files etc.

Windows update now works - but I seem to have lost my old mail program and a few others too.
I had imaged my System and C drives so I may be able to restore most of what I lost.

My computer is now downloading 1803 again - just what I wished to avoid, It failed again on the reset and update. 0x8024000b . Once more into the breach!
