Possible method to Stop/Start WIndows Update in Windows 10 Home

After extensive searching on how to stop automatic updates in Windows Home I found this which looks like it might do the job:

From Command prompt these commands will permanently stop and restart automatic Windows updates:

sc delete wuauserv

sc create wuauserv

SC is a command line program used for communicating with the Service Control Manager and services. The Delete command deletes a service from the registry, and the Create command adds it back. SC supports a lot of different commands; to see them enter sc /? at a command prompt.

I've not seen any info about sc before so before trying it I'd like to hear if anyone else has any info on all this. I need to turn off Auto Updates because I've given up on trying to install 1803 for the time being.

Computer errors-out on trying to install newest update?

You say you have Windows Home. I know that the following applies to Windows 10 Pro, but you can still try it:
Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Copy/Paste this:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
and run that command.

After it completes, restart the computer and try the update again.

Yup, I've already done that plus a whole bunch of other things and nothing allows the 1803 update to complete successfully.

Hmmh. After running that command, you can also go to Windows Update and uninstall the 5 most recent updates. Windows will then reinstall them automatically. That could fix the problem. Yet that will take some time to do.

but first try that command again, maybe there was a command from your previous attempt that may have been missing from that command

Well OK, I have little hope, but I'll try again. I've got the latest ISO file saved so it's fairly easy to do. I just hope the code that restores my previous version of Windows doesn't break.

But I have Macrium backup if it does.

The code above will not damage Windows or "reset" it in any way. It will just attempt to deep computer information. All your settings will stay the same, and all customizations/apps will be there.

But assuming that the code from above does not work, then you can try the in-place repair using the ISO file. That will reset a bunch of custom settings/uninstall some apps/etc... which should be the last resort option.

Already tried those - no joy.

I've rebuilt my page file from fixed 1.3 GB to variable 3 - 5 GB. I've run chkdsk /f and sfc /scannow. My boot drive has 81 GB free. The MS ramtest came back clean. I've done clean boots, update from ISO and from the standard Windows Update process.

I could probably spend half a day on the phone with Microsoft - first doing several recalls in order to get to someone who actually knows something. But then he/she will want to do a remote control session on my PC, and that can take an indeterminate amount of time and end up with the standard "do a clean install" suggestion. That's not going to happen.

What's most annoying is there seems to be no way to determine what the real problem is - I've looked at the log files and they do not give any comprehensible of helpful info.
