Windows 10 update fails to prompt before executing, rebooting

I'd left my computer for about 10 minutes when taking a quick break before a meeting. When I returned, Windows had completely shut down. When I restarted it, I was greeted with a progress indicator on a system update being applied. Meanwhile, I had another 10 minutes until the web conference would be starting. Windows had me captive. And after 10 minutes it was still "working on it." I was late with joining the meeting. Thankfully I wasn't presenting in the beginning, but if I had our client wouldn't have been very happy.

In the past, Windows used to alert me to an update available and give me the choice to install it now or defer it sometime later. That is gone. I am not given any choice. If my laptop goes idle due to non-use, apparently Windows 10 believes it's completely fair game to begin a system update of any magnitude and duration. This is completely unacceptable. I have my "operating time" generously set from 7am to 11pm. But the forced update occurred in the afternoon.

Short of disabling the Windows Update system process, is there any way to configure my system so it won't be possible for Windows to perform an update whenever it wants during business hours?

If you are on the Pro edition you should be able to specify restart time.

If on Home you should be able to go into advance options and turn on reminder / notification.

One last option may be to use the automatic maintenance and set the timing (your machine does have to be on although in a reduced power mode.)

Is it safe to assume your timings from 7:00 to 11pm is when your device is on and all other times it is power off thereby leaving it no room to actually do the restart?

Unfortunately I'm on Home... so I don't have quite the control I'd like. It appears Microsoft may have done away with control over reminders/notifications, as that doesn't present as an option under Updates. Only related thing I could find is whether nor not to turn automatic updates on/off.

Yes, I set the 7am to 11pm time range so that it won't try to update on me while I might be working on the computer. I usually put it in standby otherwise. My expectation is that if an update was going to be done but the computer wasn't active, I'd get an alert upon wake up that there's an update waiting. It used to do that previously, and then I could schedule it. But after a recent update, it just goes ahead and does it without my manual confirmation.

    Hello cytherian, :)

Double check to make sure that you have turned on to show more Windows Update restart notifications to see if that may help.
