insufficient disk space to update windows 10

My laptop keeps trying to update Windows 10 and failing, giving me an error that says there is insufficient disk space, which surprises me because the computer is relatively new and I don't use it that much. I follow the instructions to clean up disk space, but this does not help - I always get the same error when it tries again to update windows 10.

My apologies - I need to update the information on my computer. It is a Lenovo Ideapad 100S-141BR. System info says 27.4 GB used out of 29.1 GB. But I have saved virtually nothing on it - no videos, no music, practically nothing. So I am not sure what is gobbling up so much space.

Is it just that my laptop has a very teeny HD and only barely has enough room for System files? Do I just need a laptop with a bigger HD? I just use this for internet browsing and thought it would be sufficient. . . .

Yes, it's because there is insufficient room on such a small drive for the files created by an upgrade - in particular the windows.old that allows you to rollback to the previous version. For such machines, external storage can be used to allow an upgrade to take place. See this Microsoft support page for more details...

If your device doesn’t have enough space for the update, Windows will ask you to connect an external drive to extend the space on your hard drive temporarily while the update is being installed.
