Windows Update Pushing Dell Firmware Install Error - Is a Reboot Safe?

I have messed with BIOS updates only once before when going from Windows 7 to 10 and I bricked a motherboard in the process. I did not want to have to go through that again.

Now Windows Update is pushing a Dell firmware upgrade. Well I couldn't stop anything since Windows 10 has it automated.

Got an error code in the process, I'm scared to reboot now. What should I do?

A reboot should be fine mate as they suggest they didnt install.

Probs best to do the windows update first and then the firmware after :)

if you struggle with the feature update there is already a thread on this also.

The feature update installed itself after an hour during a nap and the reboot worked. Monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. were detected on boot. After the 1803 update finished though, I no longer got a notification about the BIOS update.

Upon further research the BIOS update was a part of the Spectre patches Intel put out for their CPUs. I heard those patches take a hit on the CPU performance so I've been trying to avoid them to be honest.

This isn't the right section for talking about Spectre though so I'll make a separate topic/post for that. I'm curious about how big the hits are for video editing, photo editing, gaming, and streaming. If they're indistinguishable I'll gladly update.

The Spectre and Malestrom problems were fixed by Windows updates in January/February 2018. Many end users had problems after the Windows 1709 updates with inaccessible boot device, and inability to use USB devices. Now with Windows 10 build 1803 those are no longer problems.

Make a backup image with Macrium is highly recommended. This with a Windows 10 iso can help you troubleshoot most problems with the Windows operating system or registry.

Try Dell SupportAssist and let it detect your hardware. If it agrees you need a firmware update, you can let it install it for you instead. Dell is usually spot on, when it comes to sussing out drivers for its systems. I use it all the time on my Dell Venue Pro 11, my Dell XPS 12, and my Dell XPS 2720.
