OK, it's your choice what you want to do. Thank you for realising that fact of life.

If you want a release that is at least a year old you could use 1703.
That release was it seems the start of the ‘Creators’ Update which is still causing headaches for a lot of users.
I don't think anyone is forcing you to update but clearly they are going to "Nag" you.

MS, actually all vendors, can't provide infinite support on every OS.
That’s why the Chrome Browser is no longer supported in various OS’s

First time something happens a run of the mill user would complain they didn't know. Guess you could say this is a CYA

I also have machine with XP and it has expired long time ago but that has nothing to do with W10. W10 is billed as a "Service" and it's updated every 6 month. It's in EULA from MS. Think of it as Service pack as it used to be called. My XP would be useless without XP3 and so would be my W7 without SP1 on this same machine.
Your 1607 is also out of date and many security features were introduced since. You should really update it.
All those advice you are talking about are just clap trap, every OS should be updated regularly. Security doesn't end up with antivirus and stuff like that but is deeply ingrained in the OS.

So are you saying that XP Pro which also has SP3 installed on my machine, is not an OS?
Using 1607 has not presented any security issues over the last 12 months, and has not caused anything to stop working, except for this dam ‘Blue Screen’.

By the way the 2 files that Microsoft ‘installed’ unknown to me were self un-zipping files that subsequently installed the Folders and ‘Installation Assistant’ Software for the ‘Creators’ Update and Desktop Icon.

    @Traveller11

Let me ask you a few things:

What is the main reason you do not want to upgrade?
Firstly the number of people who are having persistent ‘problems’ and spending serious amounts of time trying to resolve them which they are finding is totally frustrating.
What Windows version is currently nagging to make an upgrade?
    Version is defined below.

the oem installed windows actually came from hp with the machine from new.
    Currently the version is 1607.
    v1607
    OK being pedantic ‘v1607’

Now let me share with you an item presented by an Ex Microsoft Employee:

You may probably want to know why Windows 10 feels so buggy.
    Here's a very nice quote:

Full Disclosure: I worked at M$ from 2014-2015.

MS has some very talented programmers. They're not very common, but they exist. The problem is that the entire company is completely and totally focused on developing an absurd number of new features and products, giving them completely unrealistic deadlines, and then shipping software on those deadlines no matter how half-assed or buggy it is.
The idea is that everything is serviceable over the internet now, so they can just "fix it later", except they never do. This perpetuates a duct-tape culture that refuses to actually fix problems and instead rewards teams that find ways to work around them. The talented programmers are stuck working on code that, at best, has to deal with multiple badly designed frameworks from other teams, or at worst work on code that is simply scrapped. New features are prioritized over all but the most system-critical bugs, and teams are never given any time to actually focus on improving their code. The only improvements that can happen must be snuck in while implementing new features.
As far as M$ is concerned, all code is shit, and the only thing that matters is if it works well enough to be shown at a demo and shipped. Needless to say, I don't work there anymore.

While:Some time before I read that article I also saw a piece on a release of an OS again by a Microsoft Employee stating that in the release of the OS which I think was Vista there were over 4500 Bugs when it was shipped to the market place!

Now I will ask a question:

Why do Commercial Airliners have more than 1 computer fitted?
Answer: It’s because even though the software is classed as ‘Safety Critical’ no two computers have the same Version of the Operating System installed.
So if the latest is found to be NBG, then the ‘system’ switches to the computer with the previous OS Version as that one worked.

While no one has advised me 'How to turn off this dam Blue Screen.

    Cheers

I can only answer to what's addressed to me.
"So are you saying that XP Pro which also has SP3 installed on my machine, is not an OS?" No idea what you surmised that from what I wrote ? It's just an old OS without official support for long time now. Comparing to newer Windows it's woefully insecure even with other security programs/AVs installed.
"Using 1607 has not presented any security issues over the last 12 months, and has not caused anything to stop working, except for this dam ‘Blue Screen’. ". You probably just never noticed what may have happened. Just one example: Meltdown and Spectre it's solved only by regular updates and on HW (microcode) level.

Well, you simply have to stop the updates from taking place and one way that works is to set either your WiFi or Ethernet as a metered connection. There are instruction on how to get this done in the forums.

Edit.. here's the tutorial.,. hope it helps out and good luck

Ok.. now that my brain cells have held hands long enough for me to come up with a better reply I don't think there is anyway you can stop the popup/blue-screen. The dates are hard coded in the OS and unless you can change those you will not stop the message. The OS is out of date and that's why you're getting the message. You have two choices.. update the OS or live with the messages.

    Your choice.,

No, they're not. The end of support date isn't set until newer versions have been released - and as demonstrated by the 'Spring Creators Update' that date can be a 'moveable feast'.

Actually, if we're talking about this blue screen notification....

Thanks for the tip. Just out of curiosity and to add to my knowledge base will he still need to do an update to get rid of that?

If you really must stick with 1607* then you can just uninstall KB4091461 and hide it with wushowhide.diagcab to stop it reinstalling. You'd also need to hide the 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1709'.

KB4023814 (the perpetually reinstalling Update Assistant) is more pernicious and cannot be uninstalled, but...

    * not something I'd recommend, but I have to do that on my test machine which has system images for all older versions.

As I said, I know how because I need to keep my test machine from updating itself whenever I restore an older system image - which I do when trying to provide support here on TenForums. The first thing I do on restoring an old image is to hide all the updates I mentioned above.

My main machine (and one image for the test machine) always runs the latest updates, currently 1709, build 16299.371.
