    Error 0x80070057 - Updates failing


    Trying to resolve problem per title line. I found a 'solution' that basically says to go back to an earlier restore point. To my surprise, I found I had that turned off, so couldn't do that.

    Found another post that said to change Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings\UxOpton to 0. Tried that, and after reboot it's backto 3.

    I found another that said to do sfc /scannow in an administrative cmd prompt. I tried that, and it only got to 49% and gave this message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

    Any suggestions?

    Hi.
    Probably your best bet is to perform an in-place repair install.

    I was afraid of that. I'd have to reinstall all apps. Bummer.

    Actually, no you wouldn't have to reinstall all apps/applications. An in-place upgrade repair install replaces the OS but leaves apps and applications (and most settings and preferences) alone. That's what makes it such a great repair tool. Brink has a smashing tutorial on this right here at TenForums: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade.

    Maybe I misinterpreted the statements in the link


    From the copied statements below, I interpreted it to mean I would lose apps.

    Refresh your PC Fixes software problems by reinstalling the OS while preserving the user data, user accounts, and important settings. All other preinstalled customizations are restored to their factory state. In Windows 10, this feature no longer preserves user-acquired Windows apps.

    Reset your PC prepares the PC for recycling or for transfer of ownership by reinstalling the OS, removing all user accounts and contents (e.g. data, Classic Windows applications, and Universal Windows apps), and restoring preinstalled customizations to their factory state.
    I'll check out the last link too.

    One problem I am having: I have Windows 10 Pro installed. When I went out to create the ISO, the options offered were only Windows 10. No other. So I'm thinking I am not getting Win 10 Pro on the download.

    thoughts?

    Other question: Can I not boot into recovery and do the repair?

    Oh, I just read through the instructins (duh!), and it indicates it will download same version as on pc downloading too. Interesting that it does not state pro.

    Other question: Can I not boot into recovery and do the repair?
    Here are the steps in a nutshell:
    -Download the ISO (Pro + Home are in the same download)
    -right-click the ISO and select MOUNT or Open with File Explorer
    -find the setup.exe file
    -double-click setup.exe to run it
    -select Check for Updates
    -when asked, select to keep all apps and files
    -let it do it's thing; will be about an hour and a half

    I just did this a few days ago on a laptop that would not take any Windows Update. Worked a charm. I have done it many times for people's computers, including my own.

    Of course, I always have a Macrium image to fall back on before I make any changes to my system.

    Really appreciate the help guys. I'm downloading the ISO now (interestingly it is staying at 0% for a long time). Watching the video tutorial (where I saw that you cannot do it from Recovery/Safe Mode).

    I'll post back my success to finalize the thread. (presuming I won't have further question j;-) ).
