laptop not responding after 3/2018 Windows 10 updates

Looks like I'm not ready yet. I've got the MediaCreation tool on my desktop. Is that the iso? When I click on that it looks to me like it's starting the process of repair install. When I right click on that there is no "mount" option so I must be missing a step here.

I would throw in also since your using a laptop, to download all the latest hardware drivers for your specific laptop for the manufacture support website. With notebooks drivers, especially drivers that are not working correctly will give you a lot of grief. Notebooks in my experience do not like the generic windows native drivers, some will work some will cause the issues you're describing here in this thread. So as well as Using MCT also go to HP support site and download there tested and approved drivers for your laptop and store them on the same USB you use for Installation USB drive.
Actually what I do is I have on a 2nd drive a folder called Install folder where I keep all the software and hardware drivers for that particular notebook it's really handy and easy to find when you need to install them.

NO, running the MCT on my computer now. The MCT has 2 options: Upgrade this PC which will automatically run the Repair Upgrade when it's finished downloading files and Create installation media (usb, dvd or iso). Select the latter, then language then 64 or 32 bit. then select ISO option. This will download to your selected folder and files will begin download. When finished, go to folder, r-click Mount/Open then run the setup,exe within the folder that opens.

No, but I would not worry about the HP drivers until you're finished with the initial Repair Upgrade. That's another reason not to do the Windows Updates initially. Then you can see if any drivers actually need to be replaced. I have three HP's (some 3-4 yrs old) and there is an occasional update, especially graphics or audio but not critical to initial Windows 10 installation. I have not seen updates to this laptop that I'm using for more than 2 yrs, for example.

No need to concern yourself about drivers at all- only if something goes wrong that is clearly related to a driver.
As said above, do the in-place upgrade repair install without accepting updates. You can do those later.
If you reach a stage where things look good, consolidate by creating a disk image at that point before moving on.
Then if things go wrong you can restore your disk image and have another go, saving time and effort.

When it's done installing and restarting, I would keep the ISO on hand, in case you need it in the future. Now that you're an expert, you'll be comfortable doing the same process for the next Win10 Upgrade, 1803, due imminently, vs allowing Win Updates to do it in the background, out of your control.

First, what do you mean by this? I didn't think we had any choice about allowing Windows to update our computers.
2nd, I'm at a stand still. I ran the MCT, then I right clicked on the file it created and there was no option to Mount. So then I just clicked it open and I had the option to burn it. Please help because I don't know what to do at this point.
