    Updates and Troubleshooter not working.

    Hello..I am new to TenForums, so if this is not in the right forum, please let me know.

    I have been having problems where I cannot do updates and the troubleshooter does not work. I presently have Win 10 Pro 1709 Build 16299.125. I tried the following steps:

    1. Ran chkdsk which found and repaired a few problems
    2. Used DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth which reported no problems.
    3. used sfc /scannow which reported "corrupted files" which it could not repair. I ran sfc /scannow at least 5 times.

    I have a CBS.log which I can post if anyone thinks that may be helpful. Maybe the items it noted can be individually addressed? The following is a typical error:

    2018-03-11 11:10:07, Info CSI 000041f7 Error: Overlap: Duplicate ownership for directory \??\C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\en-US in component Microsoft-Windows-mlang.Resources, version 10.0.16299.15, arch Host= amd64 Guest= x86, culture [l:5]'en-US', nonSxS, pkt {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}

    Thanks for any help, Steve

    Mm.. I don't know what a regular troubleshooter is.. there are quite a few... e.g.

    - you can see the WU troubleshooter (the Tutorial is a bit different to that).

    Searching Settings for Troubleshoot helps.. and the Control Panel exposes some too.. (Settings is very slowly replacing it, but as MS migrates elements to Settings, sometimes aspects of the old familiar applets are lost, so expect duplication between the two here and there).

    The Tutorial section here is a great resource.. feel free to browse and search it.

    Starting to doubt the Windows Update Trouble shooter. It seems to find a different problem with each run and really doesn't fix the problem. Of course with WU trying to download and install the same patch (KB40909113) every time it runs isn't helping.

    Do you get any error number reported when the update fails?
    You can have a look at the Windows update log.

    dalchina...first I want to thank you for your taking the time to try and help me. I have attached 2 screen shots. The first shows the updates that did not install along with the error code. I am not sure why the update for Flash is even showing up as I removed Flash. I also downloaded and attempted to install KB4090913, but that also failed. That screenshot is also attached. I am getting to the point where I may just start over, but I have so many apps I want to exhaust other avenues first.

    Hi, that error number seems to indicate, as you might expect, corruption in the Windows update database.

    Please advise if using this (as above) helps.

    I think you may be referring to starting again by doing a clean install.
    Two points:
    1. Apart from trying to fix the Windows update problem specifically, you do have the option of doing an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs and data and most settings. (See the Tutorial section for a guide).

    It is sometimes the case people spend a lot of time trying to fix sthg, and could save time by doing that. That would take you back to the base build for 1709, so you would then expect a very large update following that.

    2. We continually urge people to use disk imaging routinely. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets. When things go irretrievably wrong- even disk failure or ransomware- you then can still restore Windows and other disks/partitions to a previous working state by restoring an image.

    This can mean you can avoid a clean install.

    hi dalchina: Yes, I do disk imaging using Acronis, so if things go horribly wrong I can go back. Using your suggestion, I logged in as Administrator, and used the Media Creation Tool to do an in place upgrade. This took about 1 hour, and there were no apparent errors. When I checked About your PC, I got the following:
    Windows 10 Pro
    Version 1709
    OS Build 16299.125
    This is the same info from before the in place upgrade

    Because sfc /scannow had given me errors before the in place repair, I ran it again. It still shows that there are "corrupted" files that it cannot repair. When I checked CBS.log I found errors of this type (I can attach the entire log if you think it necessary):

    2018-03-15 10:23:16, Info CSI 00001c9b Error: Overlap: Duplicate ownership for directory \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\et-EE in component Microsoft-Windows-mlang.Resources, version 10.0.16299.15, arch amd64, culture [l:5]'et-EE', nonSxS, pkt {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}

    2018-03-15 10:23:54, Info CSI 00002192 Error: Overlap: Duplicate ownership for directory \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\pt-BR in component Microsoft-Windows-QuickAssist.Resources, version 10.0.16299.15, arch amd64, culture [l:5]'pt-BR', nonSxS, pkt {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}

    2018-03-15 10:23:54, Info CSI 00002193 Warning: Overlap: 1 directory duplicate ownerships detected.

    Since these are in Windows-ese, I cannot interpret them, but it seems like there may be duplicate entries somewhere (the registry, perhaps?). It is also interesting the the errors show a build of 16299.15, which is not what is reported by About your PC.

    Before the repair, I also was not able to run the troubleshooter. Unfortunately, this is still the case. Attached is a screenshot of the error message. It is the same no matter what device or process I am attempting to troubleshoot.

    I am bewildered...Steve

    - I suspect your in-place upgrade repair failed.

    Did you watch what happened?
    Have a look at your C: partition. Is there a Windows.old folder?

    Here's how to do it- with all the screens you should see:
    Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Tutorials

    Did you see those?

    Suggest you download a Win 10 iso, then retry the in-place upgrade repair install - log in normally, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, disable any 3rd party security software, and don't accept any updates (just run the procedure without an internet connection).

    Watch what happens and report any errors.
