    Feature update version 1709 problem

    Hi,
I'm running Windows 10 pro Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.936) on an Acer Travelmate P253 Laptop.
According to the Acer information, update to Windows 10, version 1709 is not compatible with my Laptop. So, I downloaded and used the "Show or Hide Updates tool" (wushowhide.diagcab) and configured it to 'ignore' the "Feature update version 1709". However, despite this, my laptop still insists on downloading the update and attempting to install. It is becoming a real pain since during the download process (greater than 4GB) - over which I seem to have no control - it slows down my internet access and then proceeds to inform me that the downloaded update could not be installed. This has been going on continuously since mid January 2018 and I'm getting really fed up with it....
Any suggestions would be truly appreciated...

Are you sure? Or is it just not listed as tested by Acer for 1709? Strictly speaking, your laptop is not even on the compatibility list for 1703, but you seem to be running it OK.

I downloaded and used the "Show or Hide Updates tool"
    Why?

Yes, you can hide updates, but you have Pro which can of itself defer Features Updates. If you defer feature updates you will still get the cumulative updates for your current version. Your 1703 (Creators Update) allows you to choose between 'Current Branch' and 'Current Branch for Business'. On CBB you stay one version behind the public releases, you won't get the FCU through Windows Update until the next version (1803) is released around April. In addition, 1703 allows you to delay feature updates for a further (up to) 365 days.

Windows Update - Defer Feature and Quality Updates in Windows 10

Regarding the download of 1709 despite hiding 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1709'. All versions that have reached end of support (or will do so soon) will get KB4023814 through windows update. This installs and runs (at boot and a set time daily) the Update Assistant (and reinstalls it should you try to remove it). The Update Assistant is not part of windows update, so hiding it doesn't apply.

Some versions of Windows 10 display a notification to install the latest version
Applies to: Windows 10 Pro released in July 2015 Windows 10 Version 1511 Windows 10 Home, released in July 2015 Windows 10 Version 1607 Windows 10 Version 1703
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...stall-the-late

Apparently there was a bug in KB4023814 that meant you got it even if you had deferred features updates...
Microsoft is aware that this notification was incorrectly delivered to some Windows 10 Version 1703 devices that had a user-defined feature update deferral period configured. Microsoft mitigated this issue on March 8, 2018.

Now you cannot uninstall KB4023814 but you can undo its effects. See this post...

However, unless you have a positive statement from Acer that your model is definitely not compatible, (and not just that absence of a statement that it is) then I'd let it update to 1709. Obviously it would be a sensible precaution to make a system image of the current working system before you do (Macrium Reflect free get's recommended regularly).

Either that or block/defer the update and try 1803 which is due out in April.

Hi and thanks for the replies - truly appreciated !
Regarding update to Windows 10, version 1709 is not compatible with my Laptop... I understood that since it did not appear in ACER's list, that it was not compatible... rather than just 'not tested'.
Regarding the "Show or Hide Updates tool" - I was not aware that WIn 10 included the option to delay updates - thanks for the 'heads-up' - I'll try that...

However, I read the post https://support.microsoft.com/en-za/...lling-in-windo
and that seemed a reasonable option to try.....
KB4023814 successfully installed on my laptop on 2nd March 2018.
    You say...
"However, unless you have a positive statement from Acer that your model is definitely not compatible, (and not just that absence of a statement that it is) then I'd let it update to 1709."
That is just the problem... After automatically downloading and attempting to install, I just get an error message.....

Contacting Microsoft support didn't produce much help

I guess I'll just try deferring 1709 and then try 1803 when it is available.

'Not tested' just means that the OEM has decided it's too much work to continue supporting all their older models - mine wasn't even tested for the initial release, but it runs 1709 just fine.

Your screenshots are the Update Assistant in action. Looks like you did get KB4023814 at some time. Don't bother looking for it in the update history, it won't be listed there - or in 'uninstall updates' because there's nothing to uninstall. If you want to defer the features update you'll also have to remove the update assistant as per the instructions here...
Block Windows 10 update assistant/all updates (post #27)

Apparently the 0xc1900208 error code means there's incompatible software that's blocking the install, often this is an AV. In this thread that had an 0xc1900208 error (amongst others) uninstalling Bitdefender allowed the install to complete successfully.
Still waiting for validation of this pc to download

I guess I'll just try deferring 1709 and then try 1803 when it is available
With 1803 being so close, that's what I'd do. Why struggle to get the upgrade done when you'd just have to do it again in a few months?

When you do want to try 1803, I wouldn't let windows update or the update assistant handle it. A manual in-place upgrade using an ISO made by the Media Creation Tool is often the most reliable method. Plus, should it fail it gives a more detailed two-part error code. The 0xc19nnnnn is called the 'result code' which will be followed by an 'extend code' for a more detailed report of the cause.

Thanks for replies - much appreciated....I've acted on the recommendations and they seem to have stopped the annoying pop-up nagging screen to update to 1709. Incidentally, the KB4023814 updat does appear in my Update History ! See attached image....Kind Regards
