    KB4023057 installed as program

    I don't know where this came from but I was cleaning up my pgms today and KB4023057 is a listed pgm on my control panel. I never saw this before but the info is a following;

    KB4023057 10/9/17 988KB Ver: 2.5.0.0

This little surprise wasn't there a few days age. Do I leave it installed or remove it ????

    Thanks

You are not alone in seeing this, as this MalwareBytes forum thread attests: KB4023057 Program Windows 10 - General Windows PC Help - Malwarebytes Forums. That said, looks like it relates to older Windows releases (1507 and 1511). If you're up to newer feature updates, you should be able to uninstall it without difficulty. My oldest updates go back to 11/2017 so I don't have any machines with that KB item in their update histories right now (8 machines in all). Again, depending on the version of Win10 you're running (that is, 16xx or 17xx) you should be OK in removing this from your installed programs.

This update, according to the KB for it is applicable to all versions from 1507 up to 1703.

Only certain builds of Windows 10 Versions 1507, 1511, 1607, and 1703 require this update. Devices that are running those builds will automatically get the update downloaded and installed through Windows Update.

It may be associated with KB4023814. This installs and runs (at boot and a set time daily) the Update Assistant (and reinstalls it should you try to remove it).

Some versions of Windows 10 display a notification to install the latest version
Applies to: Windows 10 Pro released in July 2015 Windows 10 Version 1511 Windows 10 Home, released in July 2015 Windows 10 Version 1607 Windows 10 Version 1703

This seems designed to get everyone upgraded to 1709, whether the want to or not. Much in the same way that the Get Windows 10 app behaved at the launch in 2015.

Yup, it got me on 3/8/18. Even though I had everything set to not upgrade from 1703, it forced the upgrade to 1709. I wasn't alone, as many others got the same treatment.
MS has issued another one of their "Ooops" statements saying that you can revert back within 10 days. They did the same thing with the GWX app to force Win 10 early on by changing the closing X box to mean accept instead of closing the app.

My settings are to defer feature upgrades for 365 and I've just received this update (KB4023057 installed as program) on win 1709 pro, will I be forced to upgrade to 18.03 now?

It would appear not, that is if Microsoft's description can be taken at face value. This update appears from its description to be a 'sleeper' app that will only be used as and when you do get the update to 1803. From the KB article...

When Windows update is available for your device, devices that do not have enough disk space may see a message on the Windows Update page asking you to free up space by removing any files and apps that are not used regularly. Select “Fix issues” to free up disk space for the update to install.
I'm going to install KB4023057 on my test machine running 1709 to see if it has any ulterior purpose. If it does I'll let you know.

So far the only thing that has happened on my 1709 test machine (after a restart or two) is a notification suggesting I'm missing out on the latest updates. That may be due to KB4134661 that I had previously hidden and have unhidden for this test. Clicking on 'Learn more' in the notification just take me to a KB page saying I should 'check for updates now' to get the latest version, which of course does nothing with the 365 days deferral set.

    whatever I do !

So I have it already and it's still trying to install it and failing....
