Using 'Notify' is far better - MS has the option of delivering various updates, ignoring the metered connection setting. That's a rather dated and incomplete way to do it.

Notify can be conveniently set using Windows Update Minitool (free) e.g.

I haven't noticed any updates happening while using a metered connection.
As for "Notify", the only notifications I ever receive when I use the Notification feature is when the updates are already downloaded and I get notified that my computer is going to restart in 10 minutes unless I postpone it.

It would be a really good thing, if WU would notify us BEFORE downloading anything. As it used to be in Windows 7. Since we can postpone the actual reboot, why not let us postpone the whole download and configure process too? This is the part that I don't get and sometimes runs me and many others MAD. :) The computer is near useless while updates are configuring.

When I had Windows 7, which is what my previous computer had, I went into the update settings and chose something like, "Ask me first before downloading and installing updates". But it would always download them without asking me anyway, and then my RAM would run at 100% after that until I rebooted, which made it hard to do anything else until then. When Windows 10 came out, I thought all my WU problems were over.

This tool is very helpful - and not just for features highlighted.
No update installation even after reboot-1.png
    - provided Notify still works in Home e.g.

I downloaded it now. Which version should I select? The x64 or the x86 version?

Which is your OS? (bottom right). Suggest you choose the one that matches.
