    OK well..........................

I reached a screen which said "which operating system do you want" and there were two identical choices

I choose the top one and have now installed windows 10 pro completely up to date BUT all my files and apps have gone

Unsure how to get back to my original windows now ???

Do you have backups of your files?

Open msconfig, and look in the Boot tab to see if you have more than one OS listed.

I can see my documents in the windows.old folder

I was particularly worried about having to setup my email again

Only one OS listed - so does this mean no return ?

Having a "Windows.old" folder indicates that you didn't do a clean install, but an upgrade install instead.

Anything missing should indeed be in your "Windows.old" folder that you can copy back over.

What concerns did you have about setting up email again? Usually, your email is kept on the email server by default, and if so should show up again once set up.

If you prefer to go back, then you could use the method in the tutorial below to go back to your previous Windows. You have up to 10 days to do so before the previous version in "Windows.old" can get automatically deleted.

Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

If you go back, you will be back at square one.

It just depends on what you want to do though.

    OK.................

Well, a huge thank you for persisting with my many failed attempts...............

The clarity of your posts is something else :)

I have my email setup - really simple...ha.....ha..........(Thunderbird)

I shall go and see if I can dig up my old email folders with their contents

I have a clean desktop and am happy to get what I want set up

I don't have a product key as the machine was a second-hand lease machine - don't know whether that will cause problems in the future...........

Thanks again for the most brilliant help one could expect

You're most welcome Bob. I'm always happy to help. :)

You just won't be able to change any Settings > Personalization settings while not activated.
