Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

WUMT Wrapper Script is used to launch Windows Update MiniTool and disable Windows Updates until you rerun it avoiding unwanted reboots.

The script first checks if the OS is older than Windows 10 and if so it bypasses the Windows 10 "Update Hijacker disable" portion of the script. This script creates a smart Windows Defender Update task "WDU" that updates Windows Defender if it's running/enabled and doesn't update it if it's not running/disabled. It then auto-elevates, uninstalls and removes the Windows 10 Update Assistant, disables other "Update Hijackers" such as remsh, osrss, usoclient, waasmedic(svc), SIH and makes sure the Windows Update service is running. It then runs the correct version (x86 or x64) of Windows Update MiniTool in "auto-search for updates" mode. After you close Windows Update MiniTool, it stops and disables the Windows Update service, and it won't run again until you run WUMT Wrapper Script next time.

With the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, Microsoft has once again removed Group Policies and registry tweaks on Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home to protect Windows Updates from being disabled, among other things. As you're well aware, Windows Updates are important so this script, and the Windows Update MiniTool should be used by advanced users.

Recently, starting around 11/26/2017 Windows 10 arbitrarily starts the windows update service even when disabled, so the author has incorporated Windows Update Blocker to rectify that particular scenario.

This is distributed as text that you place in Notepad and save as a .cmd. Then you need Windows Updates in the same folder. We have done all of this for you, so all you need to do is download WUMT Wrapper Script.zip, extract to a folder and run Windows Update MiniTool.cmd as needed.

WUMT Wrapper Script includes an installer and portable version.

I reckon you'd just run WUMT without launching via the script and make your desired changes.

EDIT: That doesn't work. Even a complete reset of WU components will not re-enable Windows Update Service. I know that because I've just needed to manually install an update from .msu file.

Tried wusa.exe "FullPathToUpdate.msu" and Dism++ and both failed because there is no way to start windows update service without WUMT up and running. WU service needs to be running after reboot to complete the install and as soon as WUMT exits it disables the service.

Anyway it's working now:

Important: WUMT Wrapper Script has been updated.

The author has included Configurator.cmd script to allow user to restore update functionality when needed.

You run the script to restore normal Windows Update functionality.

Once update is installed and machine rebooted you can run Windows Update MiniTool.cmd (as administrator) again to go back to manual update checks using the tool with Windows Updates disabled when exiting the GUI.

You just run the script by right click run as administrator:

Make your choices and exit. There will be no update checks until you run the script. RE: Windows Defender. I don't use it so can't comment.

RE: Failing update. Before running WUMT you probably need to reset WU:

1. Disconnect the computer from the Internet (important) so Windows Update cannot automatically update. Prefer to switch off router.
2. Stop Windows Update Service. If it won't stop switch off router and reboot with no connection and check that it stopped.
3. Run the script here Script Reset Windows Update Agent (right click and run as administrator) choosing option 11 then reboot when finished. Keep router off.
4. Run the script again choose option 2. When finished shut down.
5. Switch on router and boot into windows.
6. Configure update settings (via settings panel) to your preference and launch a Windows Update check.

Hopefully everything works. After that you can run WUMT Wrapper Script for additional control.
