    Matthew,

    I have now had a chance to test your internet connection vbs procedure on a network that rejects ping commands. That network also rejects your method i.e. it reports Internet connection is unavailable despite the internet connection being valid [and despite your procedure working correctly on the same computer when it is connected to another network]. It is my understanding that many public WiFi networks & corporate networks have the same limitation.

    I am now doing a test at home.
    When I ping Google, it reports "Internet connection is available".
    When I ping http://www.msftconnecttest.com, it reports "Internet connection is unavailable".
    Internet connection is certainly available because I can make a post here.

    I just disconnected it and then connected it again.

    I ran 'sc config "wuauserv" start=disabled'
    and got access denied
    and I ran disable hijackers from your preference and imported scheduled task after that
    now wumt works but what do I have to do to defer updates except hide them in wumt
    thank you

    So okay - I stalled the Windows 10 updates for a while. Since 2016 I've been on Windows 10 Pro, version 1607. Now given 'support' expired April 09 2018, any thoughts on letting updates happen?
    As background I'm happy where things are: Classic Start menu, no screen litter (tiles), Oracle VM to access products that work in XP but not in Windows 10. What's so important about my XP stuff? I write SF and most of my writing is in an old product. Convert? We're talking hundreds of formatted files - it'd take months to achieve... a result that would at best be unsatisfactory.
    Ah... the delight of Microsoft. Enough of the barbs. Somewhere at the back of my mind is the thought that Redmond will hack its way through and ram an update through so I better plan for that eventuality by planning rather than being forced to it.
    Observations welcome.

    @zivshosh
    I use Home and know nothing about Pro.
    On my Home edition, unwanted updates will not be installed automatically whether I have hidden them or not.
    I think it suffices to hide them as long as you do not click on the "Check for updates" button under Windows Update in Windows Settings.

    @Pedro147
    I have fixed a potential bug in my VBScript. Please download the zipped file again and run "Import Scheduled Task". The new version will overwrite the old one.

    I never suggested pinging anything.

    Thanks Matthew for some reason I did not get a notification for this post hence my slow reply. I managed to get a W10 Pro ISO from my IT Dept at work and install that which is good.

    Can I still use the software here to control updates in Pro or should I use the controls that can be executed in this version please? Thanks for your advice again

    Thank you both for your replies. I see how to right click & copy the post. e.g. Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely Solved - Page 22 - Windows 10 Forums that @Callender posted above. I can also paste that into the link box. And if I know the URL, I can place it in brackets to make it live.

    I guess I was just having trouble finding post 970, when it wasn't a live link.

    To my knowledge, my scripts work in both Home and Pro.
    I have never used Pro, but some members using Pro have the following problems:

    Not being Notified by Windows Defender of new Malware Definitions - Windows 10 Forums
    how can I avoid windows updates Solved - Windows 10 Forums

    Compare the control in Pro and the control in my scripts. Decide for yourself.

    Hi @Matthew Wai,

    does your prog stop the 9 series updates
    Assuming the 9 series updates apply to Store apps, I have added a CMD file into my zipped file. The added file, "Metered or unmetered.cmd", can set connections as metered, thereby preventing Store from automatically downloading updates according to http://www.howtogeek.com/226722/

    - default network connection properties set to metered to avoid accidental updates. Step-by-step procedure shown in my post #74 below because I could not find it written out already in TenForums.
    The said "Metered or unmetered.cmd" file can automatically set connections as metered without you going through the procedure. Feel free to use the file.
