Could you specify the exact steps that I would need to do to get updates without the update assistant?
This is my personal preference: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

    Four steps only:
    1. Download and extract the files.
    2. Run "Disable hijackers".
    3. Run "Import Scheduled task".
    4. Run "Disable hijackers" again after installing an update.

@Matthew Wai Thanks for informing me of what you dislike about the script. It gives me ideas to improve the script. It is much appreciated. Also, your VBScript is "no longer available" so could you please re-upload it, I seem to not be able to find it. I must have put it somewhere that I don't remember where it is now. I won't make that mistake again. @phrab Yes "WUMT wrapper script" is a horrible name but it explains what it does code-wise. Like @Matthew Wai said, any wrapper script is a script written around, or "wrapping" around a central piece of code or software. In this case WUMT. The problem is that WUMT cannot prevent forced updates. It used to be able to before Windows 10, but not anymore. So it requires a script to "wrap" around it to disable "Update Hijackers", more commonly known as "Update Facilitators." (I hate the term "Update Facilitators." To me, it's like a "car-jacker" being called a "car-facilitator.") Anyway, WUMT is required to be able to hide the updates you don't want, and install the ones you do. The rest of the script just disables the hijackers that force updates, creates necessary tasks, then runs WUMT, effectively "wrapping" around it. And @Matthew Wai and @phrab, the "Configurator" simply allows you to enable the Windows Update service (wuauserv) so you can use the store. If you don't use the Store, you can simply press [C] to continue to WUMT in which case the Configurator does nothing and it's the same as if the Configurator didn't exist. It only presents the opportunity to temporarily enable the Update service. I very much dislike the fact that the Microsoft Store is so tied to the Windows Update service and can't work without it. There may be a workaround, and I hope I find it, but so far that I haven't been able to figure out or find anyone who's been able to make the Store work without it. The script is very heavy handed at forcing this service to stay off, unless it's updating Defender once every 6 hours at which point it enables it only long enough for Defender to update, then it immediately forces it off again. If I removed the Configurator from the script, and I really wish I could, the Store would never work unless you use the Store while checking for updates while the Update service is enabled, and BEFORE you close WUMT. Because in the script, when WUMT (or WuMgr) is closed, the update service is forced off immediately until you run the script again. I hope I've explained this in a way that's understandable, and if not, please ask more questions because I'd be glad to answer them. Thanks for the input from both of you.

@Matthew Wai, HKML\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\SettingsPageVisibility="hide:window supdate" may be where the problem is about Windows Update being missing in Settings. I'm not sure because I haven't heard back from David Xanatos about this. So check for this key, back it up, then delete the value. See if it fixes the problem.

Click on the hyperlink in my post #171 above. "Check_for_updates.vbs" is in the zipped file.

Feel free to make it again as many times as you like.

The term is intentionally misleading, so as to fool the users.

How did you fix it? Somebody else is having the same problem with Home and can't figure it out.

I deselected the option "Hide WU Settings Page" shown in my post #161.

How did you deselect it when it's greyed out?

Thank you so much!! I've downloaded your zip file. Just to be sure, after running the 4 steps:
    A. I'll still be notified when Windows has an update, so I can decide?
    B. Windows Defender will still get updated according to my schedule?

    Thanks again!

    A. No, you have to check manually
    B. Defender will be updated every 6 hours with the WDU task in task scheduler. The task is deleted and re-created every time you run the script, so if you edit it, your edits will be overwritten whenever you run the script.
