    srv,

    I'm surprised micro$oft haven't issued a fix for this though...
    In my experience a lot of the really useful solutions to Microsoft problems originate from community forums such as this.

    Great job, folks! Thanks for providing the fodder for my latest Windows Enterprise Desktop blog post "KB4058258 Install Fail Fix." Much appreciated, so see the shout-out to this very thread at the end of that post.

    Hey guys,
    I've done the following the steps listed here in this thread (after reading all the posts first) but they didn't work, so I:

    1) Let Windows Update/get the bad 58258 again -> Restarted and verified it had no timestamp
    2) Disconnected internet & set Windows Update to Manual
    3) uninstalled KB4056892 -> restarted
    4) uninstalled KB4058258 -> restarted
    5) ran DISM tool in elevated command prompt
    "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup"
    6) manually ran the Win 10 64 bit version of KB4058258 from here -> Restarted after it "Successfully Installed"
    7) Plugged in the network cable, ran Check for Updates, and it started downloading KB4058258 again.

    After running DSIM, the last progress line read 20%, but it reported the process completed successfully. Also, I only had 1 KB4056892 to uninstall.

    Not sure if it matters, but I tried fixing this endless update issue after trying to uninstall VS2015 unsuccessfully. That is, I upgraded to 2017, and then tried to uninstall 2015 but was getting errors. Complete uninstall didn't rectify it, so I tried to update Windows and found this issue that's got me stumped for a good 5 hours.

    Thanks in advance if anyone's got some things I can try; save for reformatting or backing up all my data and doing a clean update using the Windows iso, heh. I hope it doesn't come to that...

    HansW,

    This worked for me:

    Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog and download KB4058258 (middle one) for the 64 bit version of W10 (for offline installation):

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4058258

    Go to Windows Update, view Installed Update History and then uninstall the 2 versions of KB4056892.

    Reboot.

    Next, select the elevated command prompt in Windows Power Shell (Admin), via Win + X, and then copy and paste:

    Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

    Press Enter and let it run to completion (can take a while) > Close it > Reboot.

    NB You must let this run to 100% and receive the message, "the operation completed successfully".

    Next disable your wifi connection or disconnect your ethernet cable and then install the previously downloaded KB4056892 offline.

    You should receive the message that KB4058358 has been installed successfully.

    Reboot and enable your wifi connection or reconnect the ethernet cable.

    Using Win + I > System > About > Windows Specs > OS Build, you should now have W10 OS Build 16299.214.

    Hey Gaius,

    Thanks a lot for reiterating the steps clearly for me.

    So I followed them through, and got hung up at DISM w/ it stopping at 20%. (Note that fsr, there was not a single instance of KB4056892 when I started your steps)
    Error 0x80073715 in kb4058258-20.png

    Looked for a way to make it complete and found some threads related a bit to this one; here and here.

    <With the network cable removed>
    I resetted windows update (using the info from the first link), restarted, installed KB4073290 (via link in the second aforementioned link), restarted and ran DISM StartComponentCleanup. It completed at 100%!

    Followed the rest of your steps to the letter. Restarting after the KB4058358 install, I found Windows Update was trying to download 2 versions of a 1709 update:

    Error 0x80073715 in kb4058258-rest.png

    Also, my OS build was still reporting an incorrect version like .194 or something (not 16299.214) and there was no timestamp on the previously installed KB4073290, or KB4058358.

    I then went through and followed the steps from the beginning. Upon having uninstalled KB4056892, of which there was only one instance, the DISM StartComponentCleanup completed successfully...at 20%...again.

    I'm just going to wait and hope for a formal fix for this before I trash my system. If anyone knows of something I ought to do to let MS know I'm still having probs, I'd really appreciate the instruction.

    Thanks again for trying to help, Gaius. Very kind of you!
