From beginning--somehow the wrong update was downloaded, automatically, and would only update to 82%. Been working around that issue. Was suggested I do the automate WU start&stop to stop the nonstop trying to install the wrong update. That didn't stop it from still trying to update. So, had to shut down computer to stop it. The restart and my original version would be reinstalled. So working from there. Today it started all over, when It appeared to be "normal" I signed in. No icons showed up and all I had was the wallpaper. THEN BLACK SCREEN. But I can work off of the Menu.

Is this a complex machine with lots of programs and settings?

Where I'm heading is a reset or clean.

I would first recommend the inplace repair / upgrade.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

You create the key and then execute set up from key.

Do you get black screen in safe Mode. To start process hold shift down and click restart.

Yes a complex machine. A gateway tower. I "have" carbonite as a backup, but something happened there and when I checked earlier it stated 0 was backed up with 57,000,000+ files are ready to be backed up. Don't know if that is a result of my current situation. What do you mean "key"?

    Sorry key = usb thumbdrive

57 million files for backup. Wow !!

That should take a little time to process, at least you know now that it needs action. Can't see how it is related but that is not to say it isn't related.

I would get it running. Hope you have unlimited data.

It is all outlined in tutorial.

Basically you go to the Microsoft site "Media creation Tool". You download tool and execute.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10

    This tutorial

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

You insert usb key, navigate to "Setup.exe" in root of key and double click setup. This is the inplace repair / upgrade process. It is call upgrade as it will take you to V1709 or the latest version, say if you did this in three months.

Read the inplace repair / upgrade tutorial that I gave you the link for previously. Couple of warnings about BIOS settings in it. Post #22. The process is non destructive but I always warn, have a backup. In your case know your backup is usable/ readable.

If the orig version, 1607, was reinstalled and appears 'normal', then as soon as you can, run WinUpdate Stop and click 'disable' (should look like below). Click 'Open Windows Services' and verify that Windows Update is 'disabled'. Also, if you click 'Check for WU' it will take you to Settings and will not run.

To get rid of the download that won't work, navigate to C:/Windows/Software Distribution and select all of the folders in it and move them to a new desktop folder (do NOT delete SoftwareDistribution folder, just the files within it). This is where WU gets it's files to install so at this point, there are no files to install and you've blocked WU from fetching any new ones. Hopefully, this will tide you over until 1803 comes out. The suggested Repair Install/Upgrade will take you to 1709 and seems problematic installing in the background. This is exactly why I prefer to mount the Win10 ISO and control the process. Good Luck.

The above download is what I used and followed those instructions. To my knowledge I have not changed any versions. Thank you for the above info. I won’t be able to work on it today. I have to make a meal before 4 as we have a pot luck dinner to go to. Will be tackling it first thing tomorrow. Don’t even know condition of it today. Hopefully to catch u later

I have the Win update on disable and you're not suppose to view installed updates, However, I can. Mean it's not working? I worked with carbonite this morning so that is rectified for the time being. Probably the dysfunction of this machine/update caused the stoppage of carbonite from working. I just did a Belarc advisor check up. Now I FIND THIS CONFUSING. Microsoft updated me to 10 from W 7. However, the Belarc states I have Windows 8.1 Professional x64 build 9600 which was installed 9/22/16. What? 8.1 or 10? Had to restart computer this morning and I once again have all icons on a regular background. Also, another update is ready to install. Next step to create a bootable usb.

Hi, again. I have WU disabled so as to disable it checking after every restart and slowing the computer down. I know to re-eanble and check by following Brink's Update News. Now, open Windows Services via WUStop prog. Should look like this (neither running). If either is running, just r-click Stop.
Problems with Windows 10 Update KB4023057 --screenshot_1.jpg You can go one step further and disable Windows Modules Installer too (r-click, Properties/select). This would prevent install from starting when you restart.

Belarc states I have Windows 8.1 Professional x64 build 9600 which was installed 9/22/16

This is the date of 1607 release. A while back you hit Win+R/winver which is most reliable. No doubt you are on 10.

I once again have all icons on a regular background. Also, another update is ready to install.

Did you empty the C:/Windows/Software Distribution folder (again, do not delete the folder, just the contents)? If so, there are no install files to even install. Verify the Services state, as above, and SoftwareDist folder and restart. You should be good to go. Bootable usb not needed if you want to stay on current version unless you want a system repair/reinstall medium. You can make one when the new version, 1803, comes out.
