I wish I knew of this forum YEARS ago. It is fantastic by knowing the problem and then have solutions. Also, didn't have to have anyone poking around my computer and making changes. You give direction and how to follow the direction. FANTASTIC!

"Will that take care of itself by doing the repair install windows upgrade?"

A Repair Install will completely rewrite your Windows version. Your current system is stored in a new Windows.old folder so you can go back in the first 10 days, if you don't like the new OS or it's doesn't work. So, yes, your update issue will take care of itself because you'll be going from 1607 to 1709 and the failed update won't apply any more. You can elect to keep installed programs and files with a Repair-install but BACK UP personal files, just in case ! I like to save the ISO so it can be used any time in the future to 'repair' the system vs wasting hours troubleshooting something.

1709 was written Sept '17, 1803 will be written March '18. I recommend that subsequent updates to the ISO's be downloaded and installed after the initial Repair-Install/Upgrade (there's a check box to 'update now' after you start setup but I like to uncheck it) so if the last update breaks something, you can fall back on the clean rewrite.Again, view the tutorial video so that you're comfortable with the process. Hope we can celebrate Sunday night.

    Updates are available.
Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB4056254).
    • 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4057142).
Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
I blocked future updates to download and update automatically. Now I'm wondering if I should install the above. I do not have 1709 installed. Don't want to get into an os argument/fight.

    Info on KB4056254, a WU improvement - http://bit.ly/2GLNjDJ
KB4057142 was addressed in post 10, not necessary.

"Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709
" is offering to upgrade you to 1709 via Windows Update (download-install in background). I prefer to use the ISO route so you have more control over the process (like hold off on Updates until the basic OS is written and tested) and you can retain the ISO for future use (think of it as having the orig Gateway installation dvd less the mfr added software/bloatware). Again, backup your personal files, just in case. And remember, 1803 is coming out within 2 months.

Thank you so very much. So will keep the block on and will not install anything else until the 1803 is out and ready.

How do I "get rid of" the wrong update from downloading. This issue has cost me hours, to have to restart the computer every day. If I shut it off it doesn't have a chance to install. Except will have the screen show up saying I need the latest security update and it is already downloading while I'm working on something. I have uninstalled what downloads I believe are causing the problem to no avail.

Turn off Windows Update. Go to Start button/Windows Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Windows Update/r-click Properties/General/Startup type; set to Disabled/OK.
Or, here's a simple tool that will automate WU start&stop, at your discretion. They just updated to let you open Services directly from the interface too. You do need to re-enable WU in order to install or check for updates and your history will be hidden while disabled but not lost. -

Thank You. Done and hope this is it until the 1803 is out and ready. Oh so looking forward to that. How in the world did I ever end up in this position?

I installed the win_update_up. Also had done the don't install automatically. I am currently working from a black screen. Don't know exactly how I got here. (Maybe my years with DOS is helping me) I do have the ability to work from the "main" menu at this point in time, but afraid to shut down the computer in fear of loosing that ability.
