Hi KELI. Welcome to TenForums @KELI
Might I ask what version of 10 you are on.
It appears this update is not for 1709.

I wonder if that might be part of issue.
What Build are you on ? Hit Win+R, type winver then OK. Post result.
Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057)
Successfully installed on 2/1/18
2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4057142)
failed to install on 1/27/2018
Build 2035 is the latest for 1607, according to MS- https://goo.gl/6YczDW
Are you aware that Life Cycle for 1607 ends in two months ? This means no more security updates or support. - https://goo.gl/ESLlpU
KB4057142 may be a quick fix related to a black screen issue with AMD processors. Similar one issued for 1709 and many had issues. It does not supersede the build you have successfully installed. - https://goo.gl/VBVjwS
I would ignore it and if it keeps coming via Windows Update, block it.
Have you tried upgrading Win10 to 1703 or 1709 ? I would look into 1709 if your computer (Gateway desktop?) supports it so you continue to get updates in the future. Good Luck
no I have not tried upgrading to 1709. Not sure how I would do that. I did not know that 1607 support would end. Yes it is a Gateway desktop. THANK YOU so much for your advice so far. I will see what I can do.

You can follow this tutorial which also has a video showing the entire process and what the screens look like. I like to use Option 4 where you download the ISO to your desktop, mount it and run the setup.exe. It will do a check of your PC to see if there's a compatibility issue and enough disk space for the Upgrade. Takes about two hours after you start the setup. - Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade
There is another major Upgrade (re-write of entire OS) coming out in March or April so you might want to wait until then (you're already two generations behind) but, in the mean time, acquaint yourself with the process. I support several computers for family and friends and this is the process that I use after they download the ISO from MS. Go Patriots ! from MA
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I have lost sooooooo much time already getting nowhere. I will follow your suggestion about familiarizing myself with the process and not waste the time to actually do it now. Next question about blocking the unwanted update. Will that take care of itself by doing the repair install windows upgrade? Or, should I do it now? Don't know how to do it. What a season for the Pats! We have another game to "enjoy" I hope.
If the update is not required in 1709 it will in essence take care of itself.

I usually recommend to people to do a data backup before the inplace repair / upgrade. It is a non-destructive process but I like safety and it never hurts to have a backup of your data.
