FOUND the software distribution file, Made copy, renamed to .bak, and deleted everything in original file. While I was doing that the BOX popped up that update was ready to be installed. Couldn't click hide, but later. Carbonite found a lot of ! files while in task box. I cannot locate where he was to see the files. Hopefully when new version is installed, that will be corrected.

Sounds like you have it covered. Just to double-check (I never get bothered by WU messages, I can manually check for WU by 'Enable' WinUpdateStop and run Settings/WU) -
Open Services and check that yours looks like mine in post 30: Windows Update (disabled) and these 3 (Manual) - Windows Modules, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Update Orchestra Service with NONE of the 4 'Running'. Otherwise, make it that way and restart and the 'update ready to be installed' message should not appear any more.

The immediate consequence of Software Dist folder being empty now, is that your Install History is gone even if you re-enable WU. But when you install the new Upgrade next month, it would have wiped it anyway with the folder re-populating and hopefully updates will not be a problem going forward for you. Otherwise, we're here for you. Cheers, hope you got out on a record warm day.

There are little gremlins running around in my computer and they believe I REALLY NEED their update. This morning, Turned on computer since I left it in sleep and it was shut down and "working on updates 75%". Again, shut off computer, wait, turn back on and wait while a "previous version is being installed". Win update stop still has updates DISABLED. Windows Modules Installer is on MANUAL, windows update is disabled, Background Intelligent Transfer Service just now disabled, along with Update Orchestra Service just now disabled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Now anyone know how to rid my computer of the gremlins who are slowing down my machine. In task master someplace.

Now with ALL of the functions where they should be, I shut down the computer and restarted. No updates dared show up their ugly heads. Thank you, Thank you ever so much for your patience with this 77 year old lady.

When I turned on my computer this afternoon (after a sleep from yesterday) it stated the download was 75% complete. I ignored it. Now 2 1/2 hours later message popped up "Your update is ready to install now". Either now, or we'll install it later when your not using your computer. I have everything set to disabled and the gremlins are still working overtime. What ever do I do now?

I apologize for this question, why are you trying to prevent updates?

Could you share with us what version and build you are currently using?

Windows Key + R, type winver, enter

In post 4, we established that she is on version 1607 (os build 14393.2035) up to date. We were trying to block updates and wait for 1803 to do a Repair Upgrade rather than fight thru either 1703 or 1709 not finishing installation problem popping up at every startup and rolling back.

From where she is at now- "working on updates 75%". Again, shut off computer, wait, turn back on and wait while a "previous version is being installed" and "Your update is ready to install now". Either now, or we'll install it later when your not using your computer.", I take it that 1709 is ready to go if she clicks 'Restart'. Seems pointless to install and update for a few weeks so just trying to kill the Update message, for now.

"message popped up "Your update is ready to install now". Either now, or we'll install it later when your not using your computer."

This indicates that the Feature Update (likely 1709) is ready to go. You may have gotten rolled back to your 1607 version before because of some driver issue or interrupting the process. At this point, I would click the Message, hit 'Restart now' and see where it goes. Either you'll have a new Build or it will roll back to your present OS again and we can check the Update Settings in Services again, in case they were reset. This will take about 2 hrs so be patient. Keep us up to date.

If you want to block these feature updates you could just set your network connection, either wired or wireless, to metered. These large feature updates as I understand will not be installed. I know the newer versions you can set wired connection to metered. Its been a while since I had 1607, hope it is available, for sure wireless can be set.

While a new version is due out "soon" it could be sometime before this machine is ready or deemed ready to install it. I've seen some systems run for months before doing the current feature update.

I would set the connection to metered to assist in this delay.
