Creators Fall Update - How Do I Stop It ?

Please, how do I stop this MADNESS ?

A couple of months ago the Fall update went on.
All sorts didn't work, and it caused me loads of agro, so I rolled back to previous version.

On Friday, MS kindly turned on my machine (how the hell do they have the right to do that !), and put it back on again.
Rolled back again, and within about two minutes of the restart, it was downloading it again.

I put the tick in Defer Feature Updates, but I just get home to find they have switched the PC on again, and installed it again !

I can't use Metered Connection as I'm on a hardwire to the router.
This build simply corrupts my existing install and I don't want it.
Please for the grace of my sanity how do I stop this vicious circle ?

Long term I will have to do a clean install and try the update again, but I don't want to do that till I'm ready, not when MS insist I will.

What am I missing here ?
At the moment I have a stable machine doing what I want it to do.
Along comes MS, insists it puts its latest software on, and the machine is basically broken.
What do they think I'm going to do, scrap it and go and buy a shiny new one ?

Much more of this, and its Linux here we come !

Sorry for the rant, I'm more than a little frustrated.

    Thanks,
    Andy

    Many thanks !
I will run the tool and see what happens.

I had Googled the metered connection and only found reference to Wifi, so thanks for putting me on the right track with that.
Guess I have some forced sorting out to do tonight !

Metered Ethernet first appeared in Settings for the Creators Update (1703), but the registry keys have always been available for use, just not easy to set :)

It's a troubleshooter package when you choose hide updates put a checkmark next to version 1709 FCU and windows update will stop offering this update

I've now installed the FCU on 5 PCs with no problems - 2 of these were old 2006 PCs.
