By the way - I went back into my Device Manager, to remove the PS/2 mouse & keyboard, and they're not there at all anymore. Weird. Of course, I had a black screen & non-responsive computer this morning when I returned to it.

I looked at the event viewer, and found a lot of errors from earlier this morning, most related to DistributedCOM. Whatever that means...

Apparently, that doesn't work on this computer. As previously, I just get a flash of a black pane with red text for an instant, and it's gone too fast to even see what was there. Is there another way to view this?

There are two options for the log collector on this link.
    See if either one works.
If not, there is one more option.

There were crashes but no BSOD yet as the crash dump failed.

    1) When available please post images of the test results for HD Tune:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark

    2) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
    The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 6 GB of RAM on the computer.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

I just ran HD Tune health & benchmark again. Here are the results:Daily Win 10 auto update attempts, 100% fail rate-hd-tune-health-2.jpgDaily Win 10 auto update attempts, 100% fail rate-hd-tune-benchmark2.jpg

I'll try running the memtest86 now. I don't know if it will be able to complete, as there's a Windows security update trying to install again, every hour or so. As soon as it detects inactivity it tries to install, then crashes to black screen on reboot #2.

    We'll see what happens...

By the way - there appear to be 50 or so versions of memtest86 - should I use
    http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01...6+-5.01.iso.gz or
    http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01...+-5.01.iso.zip
    or a different version?

**Edit - I just tried both of the above, and neither worked. I must be missing something.

Any version for Memtest86+ version 5.01 that works on the computer should be ok as long as there are 8 or more passes.
Please use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

For the drive please use Samsung magician after the memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed.

Windows updates should not be able to interfere with Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing.

Okay. I went away from the computer for an hour or so, and it crashed again while I was away from it. Usual black screen, no messages, hard drive non-responsive, and on manual restart, got a message that it was trying to complete the installation, followed by "restoring your previous version of Windows".

I'm trying an experiment at the moment. I noticed a ton of error messages when I ran event viewer again, and checked Google for others having the same error. One person, in particular, was having precisely the same issues I am, and he actually said that he found a solution. He unplugged his Passport accessory drives (the same as I have), downloaded the update, and it went in fine & started working again for the first time in months. So, I'm giving that a go, to see what happens. It would be nice if it was something that simple (but, with my luck, it NEVER is!)
