Bree, wonder if you can help me again. Ever since the Windows 10 update a few days ago, I've lost ability to tell my computer to share with our household nerwork. When I select my computer on the network list and go to share at top left of screen its grey and says "no shortcuts available." I can access my partners computer, but he can't access mine. Don't know how to make the share menu available. Any ideas?

Actually, I do see the options when I select the users under my computer list. Oh. So maybe we can figure this out. If not, I'll be back.

Apparently Windows update booted my computer off the Homegroup and I had to sign back in with our password. Then I had to go to control panel, network & internet, network & sharing center, advanced settings and select "turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read files in the public folder." My persponal computer folder showed up for sharing as soon as I signed in with password. The public setting required more digging. I'm writing this in case others have same issue and also so I can refer back to this thread to remember what to do next time there's an update.

Good catch, glad you got it sorted on your own.

Yes, a big update, like the one to the Fall Creators Update, can often reset some settings to their defaults. This should not be a problem with the monthly cumulative updates though.

The next big update to a newer version of Windows 10 is pencilled in for April 2018.

I can't believe this. My computer is once again being taken hostage. Disk is at 100 %. I can't even use computer. I am writing from my back up computer. It's only been a week since the last time this happened. About 2 hours ago every command I gave got hung up, so I force quit as nothing was responding. When rebooted, still unresponsive. I had to wait for task manager screen to open. I had to wait for wifi screen to open so I could connect to wifi. I had to wait for update screen to open to see if it was updating. After about 15 minutes, or however long, that screen opened so that I could see it was waiting to install update. I reset active hours so it would update. It did and only took a few minutes. Disk was back at reasonable percentage and computer was responsive. Then an hour later I came back to use computer and it was unresponsive again for about 15 minutes. Now back to okay. I hate windows 10. Sick of whining about it too. Stuck with it. Dare not get another new computer, if that's the problem, because last recent experience was hair raising. One had to be returned as DOA. And the current one has been having all this updating, bogging down issues, even tho, as I repeat over and over, it has all kinds of room that multitasking should not be an issue. Whatever. Mostly just venting, I guess. Shoot me.

I was going to leave it on 24/7 so it could do whatever it needed to do whenever it needed doing, but I didn't feel I needed to and wastes electricity. And just feels more vulnerable to always be left on.

Have you been 'upgraded' to 16299.194 yet?

Sheesh - what a pain in the tookus - Edge takes ages to open anything, & that's putting it mildly. WiFi & wired internet is slow as molasses. Not to mention high CPU usage. Etc., etc., etc.

And i'll spare you the headaches when i was offered 16299.192 - had to go revert back to 16299.15 then 'upgrade' to 16299.194. Needless to say, the laptop FLEW on .15 but i dare not go back due to the Meltdown/Spectre scare. Just my luck, i'd get hit the moment i reverted back & connected to the 'net!

Recently, my PC upgraded from 1607 to 1709. From my experience with a Windows phone upgrading from windows 8.1 to 10, I knew this upgrade will take several phases, and not just several restarts. That is, it will start with the first basic 1709, then it will update 1709 several times until it catches up to the current 1709. So I was patiently nursing the process for almost half a day. Then the fun began with retweaking some settings that were reset.

Since I do not use Apps and Live Tile Apps, disabling Windows Update service is a no-brainer for me. Periodically, when this forum informs me of an important update, I set Windows Update service to manual and run the update/install the update. When the service tells me I am up-to-date, I re-disable the service until the next update is up for grabs. This way, Windows 10 Home is truly at home, in my home.

If you have Malwarebytes installed, then it may be their fault this time, not MS...

Hi Bree. Love the way you condensed my rant into the bare essentials...haha. I only have Windows Defender.

Sounds like I'm not alone in the sluggish response department. Creed asks about 16299.194. My computer still says OS Build 16299.192. The Version is 1709, which Pyramid says his computer has just updated to. Pyramid talks about disabling updates. Maybe disabling is different than turning off, because I've learned with Windows 10 Home, you don't have update control other than allowing when to restart. As it stands, I would not be comfortable telling my computer what and when to update/upgrade, as it's already so complicated. So guess I'll just "grin and bear it." Or more like swear and bear it. Thanks all.

Version 1709, os build 16299.192 is the latest release delivered through Windows Update and is the first update to include the Spectre/Meltdown mitigations. Apparently some errors/omissions in the AMD documentation for certain of their processors led to some AMD systems failing to boot after installing it. This was fixed in build 16299.194 which is only available as a manual download from the update catalog. If you are already running build 16299.192 then you don't need that fix.

TBH, while Pro offers more control over updates than Home it just allows you to delay receiving updates/upgrades, not to pick and choose what to get. For Home, I find setting a metered connection let's me download updates at a time of my own choosing.
