Windows 10 massive update?

My computer is running "disk" at 100%. Any task I attempt to perform is taking far too long. Last time this happened (October?), I learned, after the fact, that my computer was updating....and it took all day... even though I have all sorts of memory/ram or whatever it is that's supposed to allow a computer to multitask. So, is there some massive windows 10 update occurring right now? Wasn't able to detect form others' comments.

btw, i'm using a different computer to write this....can't even get that done on one in question,

If anyone is interested, I was able to finally open settings, updates, etc, and see that my computer is updating...64% after an hour. Sure would've been nice to be notified. Glad I wasn't in the middle of a tax return project. I still don't get why it has to take over the use of my computer. Oh well....grrr.

If you set your internet connection as 'Metered' it won't automatically download and start installing updates. You'll only get new updates if you open Settings > Update & Security then click 'check for updates'.

My partner reviewed the link to setting wireless to metered and didn't like the limitations. Guess I can leave my computer on 24/7 so it can update during non-active hours. Windows 10 updates must be huge. My partner has less room/whatever on his computer with Windows 8 and he never knows when it's updating. And on Windows 8 you can tell it when it is ok to update. He did that just now and could open 20 tabs he has preset on his browser, no problem.

Odd, what's not to like? I use it all the time. You can turn it on or off at will so it's hardly an inconvenience.

Anyway, there's nothing to stop you manually checking for updates at a time that's convenient for you. That way you could choose to start an update (if one was available) while you don't need the PC for anything else.

Microsoft normally release their regular monthly updates on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at midday local time (PST).

My partner said it limits the amount of data that can come down at one time, thus messing with what he's doing :) I'll let him know that turning it on and off is an option.

I didn't realize I could check if there are updates and then tell them to start at that time. I was under the impression Windows 10 (non-pro) can't be controlled, that it's all on automatic. I'll check that out.

Yes, Home has little control, it is all on automatic - but that only checks for new updates every few days or so. Even in Home you have the option to manually check for updates now. So if you have some spare time on or after a 'Patch Tuesday' (next one due on 13th Feb.) it's worth a check to get it over and done with. :)

Keep an eye on the TenForums News forum, a post will appear for each new cumulative update as soon as it's released.

Ok. I'll do that and put date on my calendar. Must be because Windows 10 is more intricate than 8 that the updates are so involved. Current update is on 96%...going since I started this thread...3+ hours ago.

What version of Windows 10 do you have? 1703? Run Winver to find out.

By the sounds of it this may well be the Fall Creators Update, shown in windows update as 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1709'. That is a big one, it's the upgrade to the next version of Windows. If so, expect it to take about an hour to install once it has downloaded. You will however be offered the chance to choose when to let it install.

Windows Spec info says: Edition- Windows 10 Home; Version- 1709; OS Build- 16299.125. After the computer restart, the updating concluded around 8 pm...so about 6 hours from start to finish. It did let me decide if I wanted to wait to restart, so there's that.

Again, thanks for your input/help. It's really appreciated. This is my go to place to find out what's going on that's making me crazy.
