Windows stuck on the preparing windows do not turn off screen.

    Hey!

So yesterday evening I turned off my pc just fine without any sign of updates. When I started my pc up back this afternoon it just randomly started preparing windows, so I waited but it bugged out by going to black screen constantly and looking like the pc went off but was still running. So I tried moving my mouse but nothing happened. So I waited about 10/15 minutes, but normally the preparation fase doesn't take more than 1/2 minutes. So I went on the internet on my laptop (where I am currently on) and went searching around. Everyone said restart it and it should continue, it didn't continue and just went back to the preparing windows screen.

I thought id let it stay for another hour or so, when I came back it was still on that screen, I thought that was not right so I downloaded the windows disc image and tried repairing windows, which didn't work. I turned off my pc completely, pulled out the cmos battery, still didnt fix it. I tried putting it back to a previous state, which didn't work because somehow all the previous backups weren't there although I had them enabled. I couldn't put back my previous windows update because I removed it due to not having any problems with windows 10 on my desktop before. I tried booting into safe mode which doesn't work either. So short, i can not get on my desktop at all, the screen just pops up and stays there for hours.

Now it is running for 2,5 hours in a row again and still didnt move.

Now my question: Is there any fix for this other than a full windows reinstall where I keep my files. (Which i did 1 week ago due to a corrupted profile). If any more information is needed feel free to ask, however i can not acces any of my files, or enter my pc at all. (unless you guys know a workaround that is)

I hope any of you have an answer to this weird behaviour.

    Sincerely,

    Gerwin

Update: the hard disk activity light is not blinking anymore, it blinked before, but now it just doesn't do anything anymore.

Update 2: Ive restarted again with no luck, i put in my usb and enabled safe mode, no luck. Now when it started up I got into the advanced booting options and chose to reset my pc and keep my files. I think that is the only way this can be fixed, ill post another update if it is fixed or not.

    Hi Gerwin.

First thing is to get your data off the device. If you use Kyhi's recovery disk this will give you the ability to boot and copy files in a known way.

As to booting to safe mode, once data is off. Power on device, when you see spinning dots hold power key down until device shuts off. Power on, see dots, hold power key until it shuts off. Power on, this time Windows should know there is an issue and should give you the Advance Startup Options.

Maybe just maybe you can use the option to return to a previous build. You will see it in the tutorial with the large red arrow.

Some of the blacks screens are caused by an updated driver for graphics being install as part of the update. Some members have been successful in booting to safe mode and running DDU.

Once the offending driver is removed an older working driver is installed. (If this is the case you may also have to tell Windows and your vendor software to stop updating drivers.

I'm not really sure this is your issue as you did a full re-install last week and assuming you were using new media I think you would have experience it then. I mention it as a possibility.

Have you run maintenance or diagnostics on your storage drive? Chkdsk and seatools come to mind, seatools to get SMART data.

For clarity, did you do a reset when you had the issue last week or was it a clean install from media?
