Shortcut to Windows Update in Win10 v1709 anomaly.

By MOUNTING an ISO, I have updated TWO v1703 system to v1709. In one, the previous shortcut to Windows Update still works, in the other it opens a Documents folder instead. A copy of the shortcut that works in one, is ineffective in the other.
How to get back a working shortcut ?

@Sebastian42, the puzzle is not why the shortcut doesn't work in 1709, but why it still does on one machine. Apparently since os build 16226 the behaviour was changed...

WarningThe shortcuts in this tutorial appear to no longer be valid anymore in at least build 16226, but you can still use the Settings shortcuts in the tutorial linked below.

List of msi-settings URI Shortcuts to Open Settings Pages in Windows 10
Create Shortcuts to Open Settings Pages in Windows 10

From the msi-settings tutorial mentioned above, a shortcut to open Windows Update that will work in 1709 is:

    cmd.exe /c start ms-settings:windowsupdate

...and one that opens and immediately checks for updates is:

    cmd.exe /c start ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

You can set the properties of the shortcut to run minimized if you don't want to see the command prompt briefly appear. If you want to give it a more appropriate icon, you can find a 'Settings' cogwheel in %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll

New shortcut to Windows Update in v1709

Did the trick - thank you. As for the one that still works - I'll let sleeping dogs lie.

Difference between two V1709 not confined to Winupdate Shortcut

The system that kept a functioning WinUpdate shortcut, also still has functioning Gadgets, which the other system also lost. For what it is worth, the 'good' system has no Java installed; and Flash Update is greyed out. How to restore Gadgets ?
If it is unacceptable to add this here in a solved thread, I hope it will be turned into a new thread.

If you mean Microsoft's Desktop Gadgets, they were withdrawn for good reason, a flaw that was too deep to fix...
    Microsoft said:
Gadgets are no longer available on our website because the Windows Sidebar platform in Windows 7 and Windows Vista has serious vulnerabilities. Microsoft has retired the feature in newer releases of Windows.

I know there are people who missed them, and that there are hacks to get them to work in 10, but it's not something I would want to do (but at least we have a plausible explanation as to why the shortcuts still worked). Sorry, but I can't help you there...

    ...maybe others might have suggestions?

Restoring Desktop Gadgets in Win10 v1709

It turns out that the someone who suggested - 'just uninstall them, then re-install them' was right. That is all it took to get them back using "DesktopGadgetsRevived_v2.exe".
The paradox remains that the 'identical' system without Flash or Java, did not need them restored.
