I've found that if WU doesn't do the job for Defender updates, you can often update from inside the Virus Protection portion of the Windows Defender Security Center. If you click on "Protection updates" you'll get to a screen where you can click to download updates. Even when WU balks, this function often works for me. Hope it does likewise for you.

PS: if that doesn't work, I'd recommend trying the Windows Update MiniTool (WUMT) next. You can download it from MajorGeeks.com.
WUMT failed for me in this case.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Unless somebody else on the thread has a better idea, you may want to try a repair upgrade install next. It will replace your Windows runtime but will leave most everything else alone. Hopefully that will fix the problem by replacing a broken or flaky Windows installation with a new, good working one. See this tutorial for details, please: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Installation Upgrade Tutorials .

Nothing is more irritating to a devoted rationalist like myself than a problem that fixes itself for no apparent nor particularly good reason. I'm always glad that the problem is fixed, but remain irked that it popped up in the first place. Fortunately this is Windows, so we know it's just a matter of time before it happens again.
    Sigh.

    Exactly this.

As an mechanic i always want to know how things work and if there is a problem i want to know why and how it happened in order to fix it.
I needed a different state of mind when dealing with MS because that logic doesn't apply with them it appears.

The most annoying thing is when you have a problem and go to MS support website, you get answers that doesn't make any sense.. been there done that.

Mine is still not working and has been having issues ever since KB4052623.

I really wish Microsoft had a repair tool or a reinstaller for Microsoft Defender.

Probably going to have to do another windows 10 reinstall but I am pissed as I just did one a few weeks ago because the fall creators update created a ton of problems.
