Win 10 RS-4 not compatible with Intel DX58SO motherboard

I’ve been very happy with this machine installing any and all of the insider builds from the beginning with no problems at all until the release of the RS-4s

Since the release of the Build 17017 and up to the current release Build 17046, I just haven’t been able to install it at all

I get the same error message with every attempt I make:

“The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation”

I’ve tried playing about with the bios, UEFI, tried upgrading, fresh install, formatting the hard disc, always the same result.

Can’t get past the frozen windows logo to the spinning/circling dots

    Hi, Bordi,

Thanks for making this thread so we can talk.

First question: Have you looked at the thread by Kari pinned at hte top of this forum?

When Insider build upgrade fails - A Workaround Solved - Windows 10 Forums

Sorry about not linking it earlier, but I had completely forgotten about it as it has been a long time sine I even visited this sub-forum....

Also, since you and I are both running rather old hardware, is all of your hardware up to date with respect to drivers for onboard hardware? Ad which driver do you have installed for your 9800 GTX+?

Thank you for your help, I’ll have a read of Kari’s pinned post.

Yes the hardware is updated but unfortunately Intel stopped supporting this motherboard some years ago so the bios and the chipset update is a few years old

I updated The graphics card last week to the latest version

BIOS on my machine is from '11, so I feel your pain there. Chipset drivers are actually perfectly fine from Windows 10 standard drivers.

One other thing to look at would be if your other hardware drivers are up to date (as in direct drivers for USB 3, SATA drivers, etc.)

I’ve updated everything I can for the motherboard from here:

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/36888/Intel-Desktop-Board-DX58SO

I was just reading that a modern PCI Express 3.0 graphics card will work in a motherboard with a PCI Express x16 2.0 slot with no performance loss.

So maybe an idea to get a 1070Ti graphics card and if that doesn’t solve the problem of instating RS-4s, I’ll have my first component ready for the upgrade when the time comes

    What do you think?

Well, it is the holiday season, so that would basically be a Win-win situation for you, no?

I tend to upgrade may home built machines in piecemeal anyway, so as you can guess, my next new build (new as in mobo, CPU and RAM) will keep the HDs, Graphics cards and most of the other hardware I have, so I don't have to dish out a ton of money building a new machine. Then, later on, I'll replace what I can afford to, usually when a great deal comes around for a certain piece of hardware.

Seems I made a mistake with the amount of memory my graphics card has
Just looked at Speccy and it says only 512 MB of RAM, Release Date Jul 29, 2008
Hopefully as you said, the graphics card could well be the culprit causing my problem

I had a feeling that way a mistake, because I didn't recall any of the 9xxx series ever having that much memory to begin with.

Still, this is odd, considering that your card does meet the minimum system requirements of Windows 10....

In which case it could very well be as you said. Windows won't install on your machine because of the age of your motherboard, since it is an Intel mobo, whereas mine is eVGA, and thus Microsoft hasn't gotten around to blocking it (yet).

Curiosity was too much for me

We will find out in a little while just got the ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX GAMING OC for £200
