Or, it could very well be that it was a big - it may have all to do with this:

And the more I read the more I believe it - this would explain all of your issues.

My 965 EE is actually an unlocked CPU, versus your 920, so that may have been the deciding factor as to why he post 16299 builds run on my machine and not yours.

The trick would be to get your mobo and my CPU and test lol....and even your cpu and my mobo. I'm betting that my CPU + your mobo installs, and your CPU + my mobo fails.

Could well be the case, I won’t be upgrading for a while yet anyway so if they resolve the issue within the next month or so, we shall see :)

Didn't figure it would, particularly since you had issues before the freaky Intel only update.

    But worth a shot.

    How to update your Microcode

A fat lot of good it did me, still can’t install RS-4s even after the microcode update

    But for Reference

    All instructions and downloads here:

    https://labs.vmware.com/flings/vmware-cpu-microcode-update-driver?ClickID=dbttwcwzxmcs0xcx0oyz0xysko2yycokkybk

And you’ll need the microcode from here:

Nice find. Not surprised it didn't work though - it's not the CPU but your motherboard that is the issue.

Soon I’m going to put it to sleep forever
But it’s served me well over the years

And if it hadn’t been for the RS-4s, it would have continued to serve happily even longer

    Respect to it

Lol. Well, technically, almost all CPUs are 'infected' with a variant of Spectre, but we both knew our CPUs faced issues with Meltdown as well....
