How to Disable Re-Opening Programs at Startup

    Hey guys.

So I've noticed that now whatever programs I had running at shutdown will be opened upon startup as well. To be honest, I find this annoying, and think it might be causing issues as well.

Is there any way currently to disable it, short of manually closing everything? Even on restart this happens, which is painful because I want restart to close everything and open a fresh instance.

I don't find this happens on restart (I just tried it to be sure). I have noticed that the automatic restart that happens when the system performs an upgrade reopens running programs though which is odd. It doesn't do it properly for me - it will reopen word but not save (or reopen) the document I was working on.

Anyway, what you could try is to disable fast start up - that should kill it as the system will fully shutdown.

If you don't use hibernation then run the command powercfg -h off from an administrator command prompt. This removes the hiberfil.sys file so there will not anywhere for it to store what you were doing and so it should start afresh.

Here are some tutorials to explain more clearly.

i'll try disabling fast startup then, thanks.

edit: tried, and did a shutdown/startup. no change. i'm running the latest version on the slow track, ie build 16278.rs3+release.170825-1441

    i'll try outright removing hiberfil

edit 2: nope, no luck. still opens the programs. :\

I tried on 15063 and it was the same. It could be an oddity in 16278 I suppose.

Perhaps check with autoruns and see if there is anything there set to autostart.

Ended up rolling back due to even more issues. Works fine now, must have been due to the build.

If you consider it annoying, just wait till Fall Upgrade comes. It is presented as a new feature, which can not be disabled. MS support says, if you do not like it, you should close all programs before shutting down.

well, that's legitimately annoying. have to use the insider build because one of my uni classes needs linux, so i figured i'd use this.

The only time I've seen that happen is when the computer was set to Sleep rather than shut down.
