The problem with dynamically expanding VHD files is that they will grow over the time to be too big. When that happens, you have basically only two options: to delete the VHD and create a new one, or compact the existing one.

A tutorial about how to reduce the size of a VHD file is really needed.

Incidentally, in my reading, one site (did not save url), talked about them expanding and apparently they eventually reach a steady state ie the space we cannot recover does get owerwritten. Thus so long as contents of vhd are not above max files size, it should be ok.

I have never proved this. I guess way is to create a vhd with limited spare space after window is installed, then add 1st cumulative update from MS catalogue, disk cleanup, install 2nd CU, disk cleanup, and so on. Eventually drive will either run out of space as cleaned up space cannot be recovered, or it DOES eventually get overwritten.
