Tried the rename thing - no luck. Put the image of (10.0.15063.0) on another drive and it showed activated for about 10 seconds (it only said 'activated' but nothing about a link to my MS account).

So I grabbed an old image of Win7 and fired it up - it shows as being activated. (I am tempted to start from scratch). Next step may be to try and throw 10 on there. I still have an image of 1511 somewhere.

Another option is to try and talk directly with MS and plead my case. Ever have any luck going that route?

    Hi.
Can you grab the W7 key and also try the gatherosstate trick?

Some have reported the activation servers from the free upgrade still working. (I was able to upgrade a W7 machine just a couple weeks ago.)

You could go back to the W10 installation, plug in the W7 key and see if that activates. If not, you could try the GenuineTicket.xml.

    Just a thought.

Edit: I have heard of people having success when calling MS about activation problems. Guess it would be worth a try.

UPDATE: I called MS and they were very nice and we worked on it for a couple of hours. They agreed that something got corrupted (the double listing of my system in my MS account seemed odd to them too) and tried to do a repair that would have left all my apps intact, but the option did not come up and they would have had to wipe out everything. So the case was escalated and I am supposed to get a call tomorrow and continue...

Well that's encouraging. I hope it works out. :)
So you didn't bother with my suggestions above then?

No - sorry, I didn't see your suggestions until after I called MS. Not sure that I still won't end up with a fresh install after tomorrow, and all the fun of tracking all my apps down, reinstalling, digging up all my user names / passwords, etc. I suppose there are worse things in life. They weren't comfortable deleting the older device installation that shows up in my MS account out of fear of messing it up even more (if that is possible). So for now I am just leaving it all alone until tomorrow.

The older I get, the less patience I have with this stuff. I need to go yell at some teenagers to get off my lawn, get a job and get a hair cut...

Listen, if their final result is a clean install, please try my suggestions -
Image your W7 OS back on, grab the keycode using Showkey, then follow the steps to run "gatherosstate" and grab the genuineticket.xml file. Then image your W10 installation back on, Change Product Key, and if that doesn't activate (which it very well may), then try the trick replacing the genuineticket.xml file - that should do it.

Indeed - I will have to give that a shot. But I did try the previous build (from a backup image) on a separate SSD, and that too lost activation. I was under the impression that once your system was activated (especially with the digital license linked to your MS account) you were set for the life of the motherboard. Meaning, that any reinstall (or previous image since the digital license linking) would be recognized by the MS activation servers as legitimate. I could tell by the conversation with the MS people that they weren't sure what happened. I don't get any error codes, and slui 4 returns nothing.

... well MS support (specifically the lack thereof) led to the initial development of the Activation tool during the old Win 8 days - now that digital is wholly in their hands (and ours tied) makes it worse... hopefully things improve as we get to know more about how digital works...

My guess is your licence on their side has become corrupt - the suggestions put forward regarding creating a new digital licence (with the Win 7 COA or retail key) is the way I'd go as well.

You are correct. I think something is wrong on their end. I'll bet my suggestions will work. But, I wouldn't wait too long - no idea how much longer their activation servers will remain available.

Followed the instructions, generated the Ticket from the activated Win7 install, placed it to the proper folder in my borked Win10 install... and nothing. The file disappears from the folder after the reboot. Tried again - verified the file was there, reboot - no activation. Unless it takes a while, but every activation I have ever done was almost instantaneous. So, I would say that this points to something screwy on the MS end.
