stuck on expired 14986, TraceRpt.exe crashes trying to build log

When I boot into Windows I see a blue warning pop-up:

    Code:
Install a new build of Windows now
This build of Windows has expired, so your PC will restart every few hours, and eventually will fail to start.
    Go online for more information.
    [More info] [Close]
[More info] takes me to insider.windows.com.

I repeatedly have run Windows Update and see it download and install update "15063 (rs2_release)" but after every reboot I see that same blue expired build pop-up.

When I check Windows Reliability Monitor, it reports:

    Code:
Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Windows 10 Insider Preview 15063 (rs2_release)
But when I check the Windows Settings / About page I still see Version 1607, OS Build 14986.1001.

When I try to build the WindowsUpdate.log, TraceRpt.exe crashes.

    Code:
    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-WindowsUpdateLogConverting
    C:\WINDOWS\logs\WindowsUpdate into C:\Users\Chuck\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.log ...
    Input

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Failed to decode ETLs. TraceRpt.exe returned error= 255
I think I need to see the Windows Update log in order to see what's going wrong with the update, but how can I build the log if TraceRpt.exe crashes when trying to do so?

Download latest official iso, double click on it and run setup.exe. Rejoin Insider Program and it will then update to latest version.

You should not be booting from usb drive if that is what you are doing.

No -- I'm booting from the hard drive. I disabled Defender and turned off wifi. That didn't work. Now I've disconnected all external USB hard drives and the Thunderbolt display.

If that does not work, it is clean install time. I assume there is no valuable data on PC as you have not used it for months.

I use it every day, primarily as an HTPC and a photo organizer. It's not the data that's worrying me -- it's the settings for all the programs and their respective databases -- 10.7 GB database folder for Evernote, 91.GB database folder for Picasa2 (that's just the database for thumbnails -- the photos are on my NAS), etc. I'd have to rebuild and resync if I started from a clean install. If I reinstalled Evernote and tried to copy over the old 10.7 GB database who knows how confused Evernote would get replacing a partially synced new database of Evernote with a completely synced old database of Evernote. Plus it's the iTunes I use to sync my iOS devices, so I'd have to deactivate that relationship, though the iTunes database and media are on the NAS.

The only benefit I can see of a clean install would be to stop the expired build from forcing reboots every three hours and popping up blue warning boxes every hour. Other than those two issues, the PC is working just the way I want it.

I guess it was reckless of me to sign up for Windows Insider, not expecting to hit a wall like this. I've signed up for an OS X beta of Yosemite three years ago on another computer and never had to do a clean install to fix anything. (It's the official release of OS X Sierra that's messing me up more with its Evernote/Preview PDF editing conflicts.) I'd use OS X instead of Windows for HTPC, but OS X still doesn't support bitstreaming audio.

So what's the best way to back up my C: drive before wiping it clean so I can dip into it for settings, etc? Drag & drop to another drive, create an image? On the Mac side I have WinClone, but I don't know if the WinClone images are readable within Windows.

edit: Just noticed I had a WinClone backup from May 2016. Maybe I go back there? WinClone compresses it's .iso backup within a .gz file, so I guess I'd have to uncompress in order to see the .iso contents.

Use Macrium Reflect Free to create image backup.
