Update to Windows 10 Insider Preview 16179.1000 - Error 0x80070005

Whilst attempting to update from build 16176 to 16179 it fails with error Windows 10 Insider Preview 16179.1000 (rs_prerelease) - Error 0x80070005

Finds this update and downloads a KB then starts to install 16179 but quickly stops with this error. I've tried stopping all non MS services and startup programs and rebooting but it still fails. I've also followed numerous different suggestions which got extremely complicated but had no effect.

DISM restorehealth can't find the files and I don't have an ESD/ISO for build 16176

I tried to reset my windows but it only offers a total reinstall losing my software and settings which will be a PIA to rebuild.

I could wait for the next insider release and see if MS have fixed it or is it a problem on my particular PC?

Hi. In the end I reinstalled from scratch. I tried dozens of 'fixes' from Microsoft and other forums. These got quite involved and none worked. Indeed it made things worse. If I were you, I'd download the latest normal Win10 ISO and reinstall that on your computer.

I had that problem. I found a post, on the Microsoft forums, about removing a registry entry to fix that. Removing the registry entry fixed it for me and I was able to update.

I tried the registry fix and also a CMD script that ran through every registry entry, but neither helped me. There are so many "fixes" online but none that work consistently for everyone. Very strange and it must be up to Microsoft to sort it I think.

f14tomcat, yes that is the link I used.

As with any registry key deletion, you have to reboot after deleting the registry key or it won't work.
