    Start up Time Build 10166

I'm been running all builds of Windows 10 on a 1TB Western Digital Green Caviar drive which is not particularly fast, but after last nights upgrade from 10158 to 10166, it appears a lot slower.

7 Secs from the BIOS screen to Windows 10 logo
15 Secs from Windows 10 logo to black screen
63 Secs from black screen to Log-In screen
77 Secs from Log-In to Windows 10 Start Screen

making this 140 Secs before Log-In is complete.

Anyone else found start up time getting longer or is just me!

I have mine on an SSD and it's just about instantaneous.. around 10 seconds. At this point given how relatively cheap an SSD is you might want to look into getting one.. I have a 126gb. And the 256gb are inexpensive..Kingston has a 256gb for about 85$ US.

I use a 256G Samsung Pro with my main OS - Windows 7 Pro & start up is blisteringly fast.

If I decide to upgrade permanently to Windows 10, then SSD will be way that I go!

    For comparison:
    Windows 7 SSD - 15 Secs
Windows 7 HD - 80 Secs (Western Digital Green Caviar 2T)
    Windows 10 build 10166 - 140 Secs (Western Digital Green Caviar 1T)

By this comparison, Windows 10 is about half the speed of Windows 7 on comparable drives on the same system; using an SSD should reduce this to nominally 30 Secs.

Is it consistent through multiple reboots? When I installed 10166 from an ISO it was quite slow the first time I started it, but now it seems as fast as 10162 (which I also installed from an ISO).

Wow, those times seem ridiculously slow!

On my lowly, ancient, test box running 64bit build 10162:

    • Celeron E3200 2.4GHz 1MB cache
    • 2GB DDR2
    • Intel G33 chipset
    • Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6V160EO

From turning the PC on it takes 6 seconds, after BIOS POST, to get to the lock screen. And 2 seconds to finish after login. That's connecting to the router via wifi too.

A clean install will fix all your problems. You have a much more faster machine then me and I don't have any bug to report on a fresh install.

Disregarding my dual boot situation, it only takes about 20/25 seconds to get to the log in screen. After login, I get the whirling circle for longer than experienced before, maybe as much as 5 secs. Problem is that, through all the builds, and, worst case, build 166, whilst I can partially begin using the OS, there is a great deal of hd activity for at least a further 30 secs. It could be related to my extremely slow and poor ISP. Trying to check updates and other related web items)

This is on a quite old i5 without SSDs.

I found out that drivers can take a lot of time to kick in. I get sound and internet in first 2 seconds of BOOT but picture takes anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds to appear depending on driver version. Another variable is logging in time to MSA and later on syncing with One drive and checking for updates. Sometimes it takes longer than usual while some times (specially syncing and update checking) happens before my network meter shows up on the screen for me to be able to check what's going on there. All those variables makes me thinking that BOOT order is not always same. I have turned off most maintenance that takes place at BOOT time but have about 10 programs that have to kick in and do certain settings between time desktop shows up and full boot is finished. Icons for them don't seem to be appearing at same time every time but more in random manner.

If you have Delayed Launcher enabled in Start-up, disabling it might speed up a little.

Can't see it anywhere; here's all that's in my Start-Up; most are disabled.

Boot time's a tad faster at 100 Secs.
