Can't back up with Macrium Reflect to external USB drive

Running build 15007 on my Dell Venue Pro 11 7130. Macrium Reflect works fine on my desktop, same build, to internal SATA drive. But when I try to backup to an external USB 3.0 device on the Dell, Macrium fails with one of two alternating error messages:
    1. Unable to write to drive E:
    2. Drive E: not ready
Anybody got any advice? The only way I can back up my laptops is to use an external USB 3.0 drive caddy with a big disk, or over the network. Haven't tried the latter just yet, but may set up a share and give it a go.
Please offer your advice and insight. As always, it's much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

PS: With somewhat red face, I realize that having just installed a new upgrade I needed to go into the USB hub and the USB root hub and turn off the default "Allow the PC to manage power" setting on the power management tab. Also disabled sleep while plugged in. Hopefully, this combination will cover the bases sufficiently to let me back up... I'll post again after I try it one more time.

It worked. Here's what I had to do to get the backup to complete:
In Power Options: Set sleep (Plugged in) to some high value (I chose "Never")
Also set turn display off to 60 minutes
    In Device Manager for
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller 1.0, untick the Power Management checkbox next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
Ditto for USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)
    That did the trick!
Hope this helps somebody else who faces a similar issue.
