Windows 10 Insider Preview to Service Pack 1 Migration Query

I have a genuine Windows 8.1 Pro build installed in my system, and it unfortunately is plagued with such stubborn viruses right now that I have decided to completely format my system.

But before that, I have few doubts. It's a tedious process to backup entire data, then install a new OS and then restore data as well as applications like Office, Photoshop, SDKs, etc, and so I don't wish to do this process twice within a span of approximately 30 days.

What I am thinking is installing a copy of Windows 10 Insider Preview in my system, and then upgrading to the official Windows 10 release on July 29 (I do have myself registered for the free upgrade).

    So my doubts are:
    1. Will upgrading from the preview to the official build again need a loss of data or third party applications like Office, Photoshop, SDKs, etc.
    2. If I move to the Insider Preview now and later upgrade to the official build, what happens to my current genuine key of Windows 8.1. After installing Windows 10 will MS servers identify me as a genuine owner?

I have another doubt too but for that I need answers to these 2 queries. Thank you! :)

If you haven't already, have a read of this blog post from Microsoft:
    http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...review-builds/
and this thread from the Forum:
    https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...e-upgrade.html

I think the relevant part in the blog post is around what happens to Insiders from 29 July:
    Microsoft Blog post said:
The crux of it is this:

    • Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
    • Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?

“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

“I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.
From which, my conclusion is that to get the offer, at some point you need to upgrade a running operating system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 (including Windows 10 Preview, although it's not clear if this is the current version or a future version of 10 Preview).

While we might hope you may be able to clean-install and type in your Windows 8.1 Product Key, I've not seen any suggestion that this is being planned.

I am not 100% sure that this would work - but my best guess is you could do the following . Hopefully other Forum members will judge on whether this is a good plan!
    • Make sure I had a good backup of the 8.1 setup (however bad it is) and that you know the Product Key
    • Wait to see if a new build of Windows 10 Preview comes out next week
    • Clean install Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to download the ISO and your Windows 8.1 product key (make sure you know this before you start)
    • Let 8.1 activate, then immediately upgrade (*don't* clean install) to 10 Preview before installing other software/restoring backups
    • I would hope that on 29 July you can easily opt out of the Insider program (assuming you want to) and remain activated, but I am still uncertain.

The answer to your question is nothing, it will still be good. The insider program does not use your existing key. Only when you do the Free upgrade does Microsoft use the key. . .enjoy the Insider Program without worries as most of the 10 members do. . .

    Thanks for the responses.

If I interpret them correctly, it's still uncertain that after upgrading to Windows 10 Insider right now, will I still be able to be a genuine customer to Windows or not on 29th July.

When my Windows 10 Insider upgrades to Windows 10 Release, will my Windows 8.1 Product Key work. It seems I will have to re-install Windows 8.1, then upgrade to Windows 10 official to use my original key.

Too much of work I believe. Please correct me I have understood things wrong.

Sorry for being stupid (read d*ck). But what did you mean by 'yest you will be'?

Do you mean that I will continue being a genuine user by upgrading Insider Preview to the Official Release, without having to reinstall Windows 8.1?

1.Did you upgrade from Windows 8.1 or clean install?
    2. Do you want to stay in the Insider Program?
    3. Did you make a backup of your Windows 8.1 before moving to 10?

    1. I haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet, but I plan to do using the ISO files available on Microsoft's Website. I want to clean install because I want to get rid of the viruses too.
    2. Not after July 29.
    3. Same answer as the 1st one, I haven't upgraded yet.

    Abhishek,

All data will be lost on the computer with the viruses.

If you can get on that computer, you can use Belarc Advisor or similar tool to see you 8.x key

Then you can do a re-install of 8. You will need a different computer to download 8.x from and put it on a writable dvd disk (not rewritable disk). You can download the 8 install iso from Microsoft. This is not the Microsoft recovery website that doesn't work to well.

Before re-installing windows 8.1 on that computer with the viruses. When the install screen comes up. Hit shift f-10, this should bring up a command prompt. Type clean and hit enter. After the done, do a hard shutdown, then restart computer to do the re-install of windows 8.

    Why a different computer?
Jeez all this is so confusing.

Wish I could simply install the insider preview right now and when Microsoft released the July 29 final build, I could simply update to it using my original 8.1 key!
